MY CHURCH | The Church: God’s Purpose For His People - Week 1

ANCHOR VERSE
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell[c] shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 16:16-19

church = ekklésia = people called out from the world and to God the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth; collectively, all who worship and honor God and Christ in whatever place they may be

WHAT DOES JESUS WANT HIS CHURCH TO LOOK LIKE?

1 a church built on Jesus
“You are Christ, the Son of the living God . . . And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church . . ."
Matthew 16:16,18

2 a spiritually victorious church
I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18

gates of hell = pulai hadoua large door; an entrance-gate to a city or fortress; a door-gate

3 a church who never loses their first love
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
Revelations 2:4

love = agape = divine, sacrificial love; deep affection toward a person

abandon= aphiemi = send away, release, forgotten

4 a faithful church
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life
Revelation 2:10

5 a church who holds to sound doctrine
But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.
Revelation 2:14-16

But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
Revelation 2:20

6 a church alive and awake in today’s culture

I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
Revelation 3:1-3

7 a church who has kept the words of Jesus
I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
Revelation 3:8-10

8 a church on fire
I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
Revelation 3:15-17

9 a church who prays
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
Matthew 21:12-13

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
Revelation 22:17
