The Holy Spirit
(Acts 2:1-41)
Yearly Theme: “Faithfulness Is…”
Series Title: ““Respectable” Sins”
June 8th, 2025
Something to think about:

Today is Pentecost. Pentecost “is a Jewish feast that has been celebrated since the Old Testament, being called the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks in Jewish tradition. It is mentioned in five places in the first five books of the Bible — in Exodus 23, Exodus 24, Leviticus 16, Numbers 28, and Deuteronomy 16. 'Pentecost', the Greek name of this event, is also used to refer to the events in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit intervened following Jesus' ascension to heaven.”[1] The festival of Pentecost always happens on the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday.

As we reflect on the importance of Pentecost today, we celebrate the most essential part of the first one the disciples celebrated after the ascension of Jesus: the coming of the Holy Spirit. This leads us to Acts chapter two. But before we get there, we must understand that on the day of Pentecost…

Key Point: “The Holy Spirit’s arrival after Jesus’ ascension initiated the spread of the Gospel to all the world.”

With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the details of that day:

Acts 2:32-41
Something to take home:

John Henry Jowett has beautifully expressed what characterizes the life of power. He writes,

“The Acts of the Apostles is a burning book. There is no cold or lukewarm patch from end to end. The disciples had been baptized with fire, with the holy, glowing enthusiasm caught from the altar of God. They had this central fire from which every other purpose and faculty in life gets its strength. This fire in the Apostles' souls was like a furnace-fire in a great liner, which drives her through the tempests and through the envious and engulfing deep. Nothing could stop these men. Nothing could hinder their going. ‘We cannot but speak the things that we have seen and heard. We must obey God rather than men’ (Acts 5:29). This strong imperative rings throughout all their doings and all their speech. They have heat, and they have light, because they were baptized by the power of the Holy Spirit.”[1]

Have you been baptized by the power of the Holy Spirit? In these last days, have you believed in Christ, repented of your sin, and been baptized? The ripple effect of Pentecost lives on. From generation to generation of new believers, the Holy Spirit continues to fill and empower, and move the body of Christ toward the fulfillment of GOD’s will and purposes in this world. Are you producing the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Remember, the way to be filled by the Spirit is to be emptied of self. The way to be empowered by the Spirit is to surrender your will to GOD’s. The way to be baptized in the Spirit is to willingly submit all you are to all He is, no matter the sacrifice.

Key Point: “The Holy Spirit’s arrival after Jesus’ ascension initiated the spread of the Gospel to all the world.”

hey
Read Acts 2:1-41.

Pentecost was traditionally a Jewish festival held 50 days after Passover. In the Old Testament, it was commonly known as the Feast of the Firstfruits of the grain harvest.By Jesus’ time, it had become known as the festival that celebrated the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. However, on this one fateful Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus’ crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, the promised “Helper,” the Holy Spirit, came upon the disciples of Jesus.

Pentecost was the great reversal of Babel (Genesis 11), for when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with a mighty, rushing wind, and flames of fire appeared and settled on each of them, they were empowered and gifted with the ability to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to peoples of all languages gathered in Jerusalem for the festival of Pentecost that day.

The Christian Church celebrates Pentecost each year as a reminder of Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit to live within us, helping us to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the utter ends of the earth.

If you are a follower of Christ (a disciple), the Holy Spirit has taken residence inside of you.He empowers you to good works, He gifts you with abilities to serve, He produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control within you to set you apart from the sinful world as you work to shine a light for all to see the love of God in you for them.

Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you, or are you hindering His work in your life?
