SCRIPTURE Some Pharisees came to Him to test Him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” “Haven’t you read,” Jesus replied, “that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

WHAT JESUS SAYS ABOUT MARRIAGE

SCRIPTURE
Some Pharisees came to Him to test Him.

(Later He said,) “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.”

(Then He said,) “And some choose not to marry…” Matthew 19:3-9,12; 22:30

WHAT JESUS SAYS ABOUT MARRIAGE

1/ Jesus says marriage is specific.

Since Eden, God defines marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman.

2/ Jesus says marriage is sacred and serious.

Marriage isn’t a secular contract, but a spiritual covenant.

Most Christian ceremonies contain vows, promises, and commitments to God and a spouse.

3/ Jesus says marriage is set apart.

The marriage relationship outranks every other relationship.

It outranks parents and in-laws.

Parents are a gift from God! But boundaries are needed and necessary.

It outranks children.

We live in a bizarre culture that either disdains children or worships them.

It is unhealthy and unnatural for a child to become the center and the leader of a home.

It outranks friends, co-workers, and everyone else.
4/ Jesus says marriage is synthesizing.

It bonds us spiritually.

It bonds us sexually.

The purpose of sex is for closer partnership, procreation, and pleasure.

It bonds us emotionally.

It bonds us relationally.

The best marriages are two people who are genuine friends.

5/ Jesus says marriage is selfless.

The act of marriage is the art of dying to my desires and living for theirs.

6/ Jesus says marriage is solidifying.

Divorce was never part of God’s original intent.

There are three biblical justifications for divorce: adultery, abandonment, and abuse.

Unbiblical divorce is a sin, because it is breaking a vow to God and spouse.

If a Christian has divorced for any unbiblical reason, he/she should repent.

If a Christian has divorced for any reason, he/she should not live in shame.

If a Christian has divorced and remarried, the new marriage is valid and binding.

7/ Jesus says marriage is suggested but not required.

Some are called to singleness. Others desire marriage but ultimately will not marry.

8/ Jesus says marriage is short-lived.

9/ Jesus says marriage is salvageable.

God can heal anything that is laid at His feet.
