This Week's Bulletin
Find out what's happening in the next couple of weeks!
https://sbcflint.org/this-weeks-bulletin/We can take hope in Christ's suffering.
“Christ also suffered once for sins” This would include the immense suffering leading up to his crucifixion, as well as the horrific suffering he endured while on the cross - suffering that was both physical as well as emotional. While the suffering of anyone is never a beautiful and hope-filled message to share, this statement of Christ’s suffering is just that, because Peter shares that his suffering is something that does not to be re-lived or done again. He suffered and died once for all. Christ’s death was the death of deaths, which permanently solved the sin problem.
“The righteous for the unrighteous” The word here for “righteous” literally means “conformity to the commands of God” and it is being used here to describe the perfect, sinless condition of Christ. This information is important to the hope-filled message Peter is trying to share, because it informs us why Christ only had to suffer once for sins.
“That he might bring us to God” This phrase is one that speaks to the ultimate triumph of Christ’s suffering and death. The verb “bring” here describes someone introducing or giving access to another.

We can take hope in Christ's resurrection.
“Being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit.” The first part of this phrase leaves no doubt that Christ’s suffering on the cross led to his physical life ceasing. While the second part of the phrase lets us know that was not the end - while Jesus’s body was dead, he remained alive in spirit - which is the form that he existed in from eternity past, prior to his incarnation (or coming to this earth in human form as a baby). During the time in which Christ’s spirit was living apart from his physically dead body, Peter shares some details in the next couple of verses concerning what Jesus did.
