1. Jesus is the Light of the World.
For Reflection/Discussion: (1) When you were a child, were you afraid of the dark? Why or why not? (2) Have you ever found yourself "totally in the dark" about something? Have you ever been "in a dark place" emotionally? What was that experience like? How did you work through it? Was your faith a factor? (3) What is the Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkoth)? What took place in the Temple of the Lord during this feast? How does knowing when and where Jesus spoke the words "I am the Light of the World" illuminate our understanding of his words? (4) What were the "pillar of fire" and the "pillar of smoke" that accompanied the people of Israel during their wilderness experience? What did they represent? What do they teach us about God?

2. Whoever follows Jesus will never walk in darkness.

For Reflection/Discussion: (1) In what ways did God guide the people of Israel during their wilderness wanderings? How does God guide people today? (2) What does it mean to follow Jesus? (3) How does following Jesus illuminate or shed light on our experience as human beings?

Text of The Prayer of St. Francis

"As Christians, the Bible encourages us to "let our light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:6) The prayer of St Francis reminds us just how we can do that." Includes the text as well as a musical performance of the prayer by the Canadian Tenors. Crosswalk, May 13, 2006.

For Reflection/Discussion: (1) Why, in your judgment, did some people believe in and follow Jesus, while others were fiercely opposed to him and his teaching? (2) What light does Jesus shed on your life? Is it a light that you welcome? (3) Do you know someone who is in a dark place emotionally, spiritually, or morally? How can you share the light of Christ in their lives?
