When what SHOULD happen DOESN'T happen ... then what does happen should TEACH us something.

Gratitude is MORE THAN praising God that “good has” come from a situation.

“He chooses for his people, God chooses for his people better than they could choose from themselves; if they are in [difficulty], there is a need-be for it, and if he withholds nothing from them but what upon the whole it is better that they should be without.” - John Newton

It's trusting God that whatever COMES into your life is for the good, and whatever He WITHHOLDS is for the good.
