What About the Holy Spirit? Text: John 16:7-11
Today’s question: We hear a lot about God the Father and Jesus, but not as much about the Holy Spirit. What is His work as God, and how do we relate to Him in our lives?
John 16:7, Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
1) Who is the Holy Spirit?
- The Holy Spirit is God.
Acts 5:3,4, But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
Acts 13:2, While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Ephesians 4:30, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit empowers what the Father elects and the Son embodies.
John 16:7, Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

2) What does the Holy Spirit do?
- The Holy Spirit inspires and illuminates Scripture.
II Peter 1:21, For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:17,18, …That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you…
- The Holy Spirit convicts and saves sinners.
John 16:8-11, And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
- The Holy Spirit indwells and equips saints.
II Corinthians 1:21,22, And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
I Corinthians 6:11, But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
