Counter Culture: Healthy Confrontation Over Unhealthy Cancellation

Counter Culture: Healthy Confrontation Over Unhealthy Cancellation

Tonight we’re looking at how Jesus challenges his followers to approach conflicts that arise. Jesus has some pretty strong things to say about anger and dealing with conflict and his invitation pushes back against the ‘cancel culture’ mantra of our society. He calls us to step forward in seeking reconciliation and restored relationships. We’re to model healthy confrontation over unhealthy cancellation.

Conflict is a part of our everyday lives and living.
--and it's Mom who often helped us learn how to navigate it...
As we're stirred by anger we're reminded of the call from the book of James

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
—James 1:19-20

or remember Jesus' words about anger...

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. -Matthew 5:21-22
Relational Resolution Matters to Jesus.

“The difference between spiritual and unspiritual community is not whether conflict exists, but rather in our attitude toward it and our approach to handling it.” ~Larry Crabb (Christian therapist and author)
Go privately to the person who has wronged you or you have wronged and seek to reconcile. In our culture we're pushed to broadcast conflict and spill the tea...but Jesus is pushing us to be different.

Make observations, not accusations.
Get the facts and listen to understand.
Promote resolution. The point is not to fight, win, or prove someone wrong.
The point is to restore trust and harmony relationally.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. --Romans 12:18
How are we to navigate conflicts…Jesus shows us here in Matthew 18.

-- here’s some other helpful tips…as we practice what Jesus is preaching.
“Own your Part”

“Overlook what you can” (Proverbs 19:11 - Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.)

"Don’t try to win" - seek to resolve the conflict/tension.

“Only talk to people who are part of the problem or solution” (kill gossip)

CONFLICT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW WHO YOU BELONG TOO...
