Revelation 13
Two views of interpretation: Premillennial v Amillennial

Pre-mil View - Grant Osborne, Revelation verse by verse
Revelation is understood by a literal interpretation of the symbols which speak of a future time just prior to Christ’s return when an antichrist will arise and a Tribulation period will begin.

Amil View - Nancy Guthrie, Blessed
Revelation is not a crystal ball looking into what only happens in the future, it is primarily a discipleship manual for all Christ followers who are in the world but not of the world, using OT references, symbols to encourage believers in every age to persevere in faith, witness for Christ while suffering tribulation and opposition from evil, with our hope fixed on Christ’s return.
Two Beasts Empowered by the Dragon
(symbols pointing beyond themselves to a reality)

Daniel 7 is repurposed in Revelation 13
Revelation 2:13 = “church at Pergamum… ‘where Satan has his throne"
-a beast from the sea = the devil attacks God’s plan and people by influencing political powers

-a beast out of the earth = the devil attacks God’s plan and people by deceiving a culture and enforcing allegiance

-mark of the beast = not a physical mark but a belief and lifestyle that aligns against Christ
Historic Backdrop and POINT = The beast (political/cultural evil) is very resilient:
Evil counterfeits God to deceive and destroy

5:6 Lamb slain vs 13:3 beast has one head slain

5:9 Lamb every tribe, nation vs 13:7 beast every people and nation

5:13 All creation worships Lamb vs 13:4 whole earth worships dragon-beast

5:6 Lamb 7 horns vs 13:11 looks like lamb but speaks like dragon

5 Holy Trinity: Father, Jesus, Spirit vs 12-13 unholy trinity: dragon, beast 1 & 2

7:3 marked foreheads God’s people vs 13:16 marked forehead-hand beast people
So What for us?
