God’s Design for Life and Relationship; A Rhythm for Rest

God’s Design for Life and Relationship; A Rhythm for Rest

Genesis 2 zooms in on the creation of humanity, highlighting God’s personal involvement and intentional design. Unlike the broader overview in chapter 1, this chapter focuses on the creation of man, the Garden of Eden, the gift of work, the importance of obedience, and the institution of marriage. Oh, and don’t forget rest and refreshment. How do we do that in our fast paced world? See You Sunday. Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

"Today we're talking about God’s rhythm for life: working, resting, and living with purpose instead of running ourselves ragged."
Regarding the afterlife, Steven Hawking declared in 2011, “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” We are each free to believe what we want, and it is my view that the simplest explanation is there is no God. No one created the universe, and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realization. There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”
Yet Christians do not lose the Sabbath; every day is a day of rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Rest is now found in a Person, not just a day.

First you believe in Christ, and find rest in His grace, then you work
Though we are free from the legal obligation of the Sabbath, don’t ignore the importance of a day of rest. God has built us, so we need one. Avoid it long enough and you’ll see the effects!

We are not to judge other brothers and sisters who set aside a day of Sabbath, unto the Lord. Colossians 2:16.
The Sabbath—More Than a Day

As Israel kept the Sabbath set apart, they were reminded that they were also being set apart:

1. Exodus 31:13 so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge that I am the Lord who sanctifies you and sets you apart [for Myself]. AMP

2. Believers today, under the New Covenant, are not bound to keep the sign of the Old Covenant.
Vs 4-7 Man created to work

When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs[ came up from the ground and watered all the land. 7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. ESV
We are stewards of God’s earth.

Work isn’t a curse

Work is Worship
When you trust Jesus as your Lord, you become a new creation and enter into His spiritual rest.

a. Matthew 11: 8 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ESV

The Lord God Formed

A Man out of dust
And breathed into his nostrils
The breath of life

The implication, readily seen by any Hebrew reader, [is] that man was specially created by God’s breathing some of His own breath into him.” (Boice)
Two Trees

God intentionally placed two trees in the Garden of Eden because He valued Adam and Eve’s free will. As His precious, created beings who were made distinctly in His own image, Adam and Eve possessed the ability to choose.
1. In the beginning, God worked and He rested. He created — then He celebrated.

He didn’t run to save 3 minutes — He walked in the garden with Adam in the cool of the day.

2. Today, Jesus offers us the same invitation:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” MSG

3. Not just one day a week — but every day, every breath, every moment.

4. Church, let’s stop running for 3 extra minutes.

5. Let’s start living in the rest, the rhythm, and the life God designed us for — from the very beginning."

6. God still has a Tree of Life Available to His people!!
