Sunday Service April 27, 2025

Welcome to Worship! We are so glad that you have joined us to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. This is an exciting time as we remember the sacrifice Christ made on the cross for humanity and the victory he gave through his resurrection. Have you made the decision to trust in Jesus? Are you now a believer? If so, that is so awesome. We are excited for you and we invite you to join us Sunday April 27 as Pastor Bruce Mayhew explains the next steps that you take once you have trusted in Jesus for forgiveness and eternal life. In today's message Pastor Bruce explains Jesus command to be baptized. While these are exciting times, there can also be some doubt and questioning regarding what all this means and how to move forward with Jesus. We are here to help and encourage you as a part of the family of God at Gateway. Worship with us Sundays at 10 a.m. at 701 Formosa Avenue in Winter Park, FL or through our livestream at www.entertolive.org/gateway-live. Life Groups for all ages follow the service.

WATER BAPTISM
Why Do We Baptize?
We baptize because Jesus Christ commanded us to baptize new believers.
What Is Baptism?
Baptism is one of two religious practices or rituals that Jesus commanded his followers to observe. The other was Communion or the Lord’s Supper.

Through baptism a believer confesses faith in Jesus Christ and demonstrates forgiveness of sin, death in Christ, and new life in Christ.
Baptism as a sacrament or ordinance.
Sacrament comes from the Latin root word, sacer, meaning holy, consecrated, or set apart.
sacrament
• Oath by Roman soldiers on enlistment
• In Roman law it was a pledge or deposit of money in legal proceedings
sacrament
• Baptism is the ritual through which a disciple makes their profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
• As a soldier gave an oath in joining the Roman army, a disciple gives their public oath to Christ through baptism.
sacrament
• Over time the term sacrament came defined as a means through which and individual receives grace.
• This developed into the teaching that one could not be saved apart from baptism.
sacrament
•The Roman Catholic Church developed seven sacraments (baptism, confirmation, communion, confession, anointing of the sick, holy orders, marriage).
• In Catholicism saving grace is conferred through the sacraments.
sacrament
• We understand sacrament in the earliest sense of being a religious ritual of consecration.
• Thus, baptism does not confer saving grace and is often called an ordinance.
• Baptism was ordered by Jesus Christ.
1. Repent
2. Be baptized
3. Be forgiven
4. Receive the Holy Spirit.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit
We are baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit when we repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
Who Should Be Baptized?
Jesus commanded that disciples (believers and followers of Christ) be baptized.
When Do We Baptize?
We baptize after a person confesses their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This is Believer’s Baptism.
How Do We Baptize?
We baptize by immersion in a body of water.
The word “to baptize” literally means “to dip or immerse”. It was used to describe cloth being dipped into a vat of dye.
Baptism of believers by immersion was the practice of the New Testament
and the early church.
