HEALING & HURTING
SCRIPTURE
Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! Acts 3:1-10 (NLT)
WHAT CAUSES HURT?
1/ We can be hurt by the broken world.
“Why do bad things happen to good people?!”
2/ We can be hurt by dark spiritual forces.
For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but…against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
3/ We can be hurt by other people.
In these moments, we all choose to live as victims or as victorious!
4/ We can be hurt by poor choices.
Regardless of why you’re hurting, God is deeply aware and present.
WHY DOES GOD ALLOW HURT?
In the natural mind, there’s no way to reconcile this. But we see clearly in Scripture. God doesn’t cause our hurt but uses it as a tool to shape us!
1/ God may use our hurt to mature us.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4
2/ God may use our hurt to show more of Himself.
This is seen in Paul and in Job.
3/ God may use our hurt to help us identify with Christ.
I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death. Philippians 3:10
4/ God may use our hurt to expose His glory to others.
A huge crowd kept following Him wherever He went…as He healed the sick. John 9:3
5/ God may use our hurt to help others.
He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. 2 Corinthians 1:4
DOES GOD HEAL?
Yes! Without question, God is healer! It is His nature to heal! But we must believe! Jesus could not do miracles in Nazareth because they didn’t have faith.
1/ Sometimes God heals us instantly.
2/ Sometimes God heals us over time.
This is about the Lord developing me.
This is about the Lord displaying His glory.
This is about the Lord delivering in His time.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways.” Isaiah 55:8
There is always purpose in your pain!
3/ Sometimes God heals us in heaven.
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:14
