https://www.centralmethodist.com/connectioncardThere is a difference between fans and followers. Fans are there in the good times to cheer. Followers show up when no one is watching. How do we move from being a fan of Jesus to a follower? From casual to committed?
Colossians chapter 2 gives us some clues. Paul writes to this new church while in prison and gives them encouragement and next steps. He tells them to not on receive Christ as Lord but to continue to let your roots grow down deeper in him. When you do that, your faith will be strengthened and you will overflow with thankfulness. What a great picture of a life with God, overflowing with thankfulness.
So How do we build our foundation? Move from Fan to Follower?
Big idea - One of the primary ways we move from fan to follower is how we do church. We become what we are committed to.
At Central, here is our pathway to making disciples. As you read through these, think about these are at work in your life.
1) Connect: Come Worship as You Are - There are so many things coming at us in life, information, circumstances, challenges. We need to gather regularly to focus and refocus on what is most important. While this certainly applies to worship on Sundays, worship is something we need to do each day. Meet God in prayer and the word. The world needs people who live a deep life with God.
2) Grow: Find Spiritual Friendships - We each need people in our life who know us and whom we know. With the business of our world, we need to fight for relationships. We need our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is crucial we cultivate those relationships.
3) Serve: Make a Difference - We do just live for ourselves, we live to serve. Jesus said the greatest among you will be your servant. Hannah Whitall Smith in The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life said the key is to move from "must I?" to "may I?". It is allowing God to have more full control over your life.
4) Give: Live Generously - You can tell a lot about a person by how they spend their time and their money. Be a generous person with your money. Give to support your local church. The Old Testament says 10% of your income is God's and if you don't give that to God, you are stealing from God. The New Testament says that all of it is God's. Live Generously.
5) Go: Show and Tell - Sharing our faith is not just the job of the preacher; it is everyone's responsibility and privilege. We get to shape eternal outcomes.
Application: Choose One Area to Focus on
1) Connect - What words describe my current level of worship with God?
2) Grow - What spiritual friendships am I cultivating?
3) Serve - Do I have a "May I?" attitude?
4) Give - What does my current level of generosity say about my trust in God?
5) Go - Do I see myself as a witness for Christ?
