What About Eternal Security?, Text: Hebrews 6:1-12

Today’s question: “If we have truly placed our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, can we ever lose our salvation?”

Application #1: Move past the basics of our Christian faith.

Hebrews 6:1, Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity…

Hebrews 6:1,2, …Not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
Application #2: Rest in the sufficiency of Christ.

Hebrews 6:4-6, For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Biblical support for eternal security:

1. Eternal life means eternal life.
- John 10:28, I give them eternal life, and they will never perish…

2. We can’t earn salvation, and we can’t keep salvation.
- John 10:28, I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

3. God finishes what He starts.
- Philippians 1:6, I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:29,30, For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

4. If one could lose salvation, it would be impossible to gain it back.
- Hebrews 6:4,6, For it is impossible… …to restore them again…

5. Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
- Ephesians 1:13,14, In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

6. Jesus’ blood covers all sins: past, present, and future.
- Hebrews 7:25, …He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

7. The Father never loses a child.
- John 10:29, My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

“Salvation is not based on our ability to hold on to God, but on His power to hold on to us.”
Application #3: Grow into the better life salvation offers.

Hebrews 6:7,8, For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Hebrews 6:9, Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.

- Don’t give up on yourself and those you love because God never does.

- Pray, think, and speak with optimism regarding those who have professed faith in Christ.

- Go all in for the only sure thing.

Hebrews 6:11,12, And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

“Most Christians have just enough Christianity to bug them but not enough to bless them.”
