"I AM PETER"

"I AM PETER"

When we look at Peter and the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion, we can’t help but look at Peter as a coward and a failure. But before we point fingers at Peter, let us examine our lives and see how, for many of us, we can relate to Peter’s decision in the midst of pressure and fear. Join us on Easter Sunday as we look at important lessons we can learn from the life of Peter. You can also watch the service at a later time in our: Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/ChristLoveCommunityChurch YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXlXSix47b2zKX193g8SaIA Website: mychristlove.org

Sermon Title: “I AM PETER”

Exploring the Text:

The story of Peter’s threefold denial of Christ is found in all four Gospel accounts: Matthew 26:69–74, Mark 14:66–72, Luke 22:55–62, and John 18:15–18, 25–27.
Important Lesson to Learn from Peter:

I. We should listen to the warning of Jesus.

Luke 22:31-34, “31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” 34 But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

Proverbs 16:18, ”Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

1 Corinthians 10:12-13, “12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Romans 12:3, “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.
Important Lesson to Learn from Peter:

II. There is a purpose for our failure

Luke 22:32, “31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. “32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

This is the difference between Judas and Peter. Both have remorse. But Peter came back to Jesus while Judas, instead of running to Jesus, pronounced judgment on himself.

Matthew 27:3-5, “3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Luke 22:61-62, “61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” 62 And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

Romans 8:28, “28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Important Lesson to Learn from Peter:

III. There is restoration through Jesus Christ

John 21:15-17, “15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”16 Again, Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

1 John 1:8-9, “8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 Peter 5:10, "And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast,"
Conclusion:

Through Peter's narrative, we are reminded that none of us is exempt from experiencing failures in our lives. But instead of running away from Jesus when we fail, we should run towards Him, repent, and seek forgiveness. When we do, we are assured that God’s grace, mercy, and restoration will abound through the blood of Jesus Christ.
