Scripture: John 10:11, 14-15; 11:1-4, 17, 20a, 21, 23-27, 38-39a, 43-47, 53; Matthew 16:21; John 18:28, 33, 36-37; 19:1-3, 6-11a, 16-19, 28-30, 40-42; 20:1, 18-22; 1 Peter 1a, 3-5
John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep… 14 "I am the good shepherd. I know My own sheep, and they know Me, 15 as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father. I lay down My life for the sheep.
John 11:1 Now a man was sick, Lazarus, from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair (John 12:3, Matthew 26:6-7, Mark 14:3, Luke 7:37-38), and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Him: "Lord, the one You love is sick." 4 When Jesus heard it, He said, "This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."… 17 When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days… 20a As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him… 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn't have died… 23 "Your brother will rise again," Jesus told her. 24 Martha said, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die-- ever. Do you believe this?" 27 "Yes, Lord," she told Him, "I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world."… 38 Then Jesus, angry in Himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39a "Remove the stone," Jesus said… 43 After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44a The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him and let him go." 45 Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what He did believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do since this man does many signs (transformed water to wine, healed a sick boy, healed a lame man, fed a large crowd, calmed a stormy sea, healed a man blind from birth, resurrected a dead man)? … 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.
Matthew 16:21 From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
John 18:28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover… 33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" … 36 "My kingdom is not of this world," said Jesus. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here." 37 "You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice."
John 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. 2 The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and threw a purple robe around Him. 3 And they repeatedly came up to Him and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and were slapping His face… 6 When the chief priests and the temple police saw Him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate responded, "Take Him and crucify Him yourselves, for I find no grounds for charging Him." 7 "We have a law," the Jews replied to him, "and according to that law He must die, because He made Himself the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 So Pilate said to Him, "You're not talking to me? Don't You know that I have the authority to release You and the authority to crucify You?" 11a "You would have no authority over Me at all," Jesus answered him, "if it hadn't been given you from above… 16 So then, because of them, he handed Him over to be crucified. Therefore they took Jesus away. 17 Carrying His own cross, He went out to what is called Skull Place, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him and two others with Him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign lettered and put on the cross. The inscription was: JESUS THE NAZARENE THE KING OF THE JEWS… 28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I'm thirsty!" 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop and held it up to His mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit… 40 Then they took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromatic spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. 42 They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.
John 20:1 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb… 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what He had said to her. 19 In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" 20 Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 After saying this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.”
1 Peter 1:1a Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: … 3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5 You are being protected by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
