Untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” 6The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Matthew 21:1–3 (ESV) - …Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Matthew 21:4-5 (ESV) - This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Matthew 21:6-7 (ESV) - The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
Matthew 21:8 (ESV) - Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
John 6:14–15 (ESV) - When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Matthew 21:9 (ESV) - And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
This scene places Jesus was at the heart of Jewish expectations and Roman fears.
Matthew 21:10-11 (ESV) - And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Jesus entered Jerusalem not as a king people expected, but as the King we truly need.

The crowd expected…What Jesus offers
A conquering king on a warhorse...A humble king on a donkey
A political revolution...A spiritual transformation
Freedom from Rome....Freedom from sin and death
Military power and force...Meekness, service, and peace
A crown and throne...A cross and resurrection
To be saved from suffering and oppression...A Savior who suffers with and for us.
A Messiah for Israel only...A King for all nations
Do we welcome Jesus on His terms, or our own?

Discussion Questions (Read Matthew 21:1-11 and pray before discussing)
1. What stands out to you about Jesus riding a donkey instead of a war horse? What does that choice tell us about the kind of King He is? Why is it important that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy?
2. What do you notice about the crowd’s reaction to Jesus? How might their expectations have influenced their excitement?
3. Review the differences between what the crowd expected and what Jesus offers. Which of these stands out to you the most and why?
4. What kind of “king” to you sometimes expect Jesus to be in your own life? Here’s a few examples:
o Handyman – when life breaks you call on Jesus to fix it.
o The ATM machine – if I let God in I should get all kinds of things out.
o The negotiator – if you do this for me, then I’ll do this for you. Or, if I do this for you, then you should do this for me.
o A bail bondsman – He’s your way out of hell.
