1. Jesus willingly faced a false trial as the spotless Lamb of God
2. Jesus willingly took our place on the cross to set us free
Luke 27:16
At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas…
Barabbas - "son of the father"
John 18:37-38
“You are a king then?” Pilate asked.“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”“What is truth?” said Pilate.

3. Jesus willingly bore our shame to pay our sin

Dig Deeper:
1. As we prepare for Easter, what is on your heart and mind during this time? Why?
2. Review the events leading up to Mark 15 that have been discussed during this series. Is Jesus ready for what’s to come? Why or why not?
3. Read Mark 15:1. Who is at the meeting? Why is this significant? Who did they hand him over to? Why?
4. Read Mark 15:2-3. What is Pilate asking Jesus? What does Jesus’s reply imply? What might the chief priests included in the how they accused Him “of many things”?
5. Read Mark 15:4-5. Would this be the normal reaction in this situation? Why or why not?
6. Read Isaiah 53:7. How is Jesus living this verse out? Look up other passages from the Old Testament that prophesied about Jesus’s death.
7. Read Mark 15:6. During what time of the year did Pilate allow this? Why? What do we learn about Pilate from this?
8. Read Mark 15:7. Why was Barabbas put in prison? Read Luke 27:16 to learn more about Barabbas. What is he notorious for?
9. Is Barabbas guilty? Should he be convicted of his crimes? How is Barabbas different than Jesus?
10. Read Mark 15:8-10. Information about what Pilate knows is revealed in this passage. What does he know? Based on this information, do you think Pilate thought Jesus was guilty? What do you think Pilate is imagining will happen at this moment?
11. Read Mark 15:11-13. Who stirred up the crowd? Why?
12. Pilate asks, “What do you want me to do with Jesus?” Why must everyone answer this question?
13. Read Mark 15:13-14. Why would the crowd want to release a known murderer for a Rabbi?
14. Read John 18:37. Does Pilate understand what Jesus is saying? Do others? Why or why not?
15. Read John 18:38. How would you answer this question? Is there an absolute truth in the universe?
16. Read Matthew 15:14. Is crucifixion the only method they used at this time? Who were crucifixions reserved for?
17. Read Matthew 27:24-25. Again, what does Pilate want from the crowd? What is happening instead?
18. What does Pilate say to the crowd? Why? What do the people respond with? Why?
19. Read Mark 15:15-18. Who leads Jesus away? What do they do to Him? What do they say to Him?
20. Read Mark 15:19-20. Describe the ways in which Jesus is belittled in this passage?
21. Read Isaiah 53:5-6. Identify and describe the actions that led to Jesus being crucified. Who was Jesus crucified for?
22. Read 1 John 2:2. What does propitiation mean? What does it mean for us?
23. Despite not necessarily having committed the same crimes as Barabbas, how can we relate to him in this situation?
24. How are you preparing your heart as we remember what Jesus endured and look ahead to Easter?

Live It Out:

Jesus took our place on the cross. We are sinners that need a Savior.

Jesus took our place – He was our substitute in order to give us hope and salvation! Jesus loves undeserving people. He endured the cross to LOVE YOU. The cross still speaks hope to us today. In that moment, God was loving even his crucifiers! And God was loving us in that moment.

If you are a follower of Jesus, do you recognize the great lengths Jesus went to save you and redeem you? Praise God for the freedom given to us and secured by the blood of Jesus. As we look ahead to next weekend, examine your relationship with Jesus. Is there hidden sin or unrepentance? Take time to confess, pray, worship, and ask for His renewal.

Have you placed your faith in Jesus alone for your salvation? If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ, you can repent and believe in Him today. You can leave your sin at the cross today. Because Jesus took our place and bore our shame to pay for our sin. He took your place and through His blood, your sin can be washed away. Pray to Him: “Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sin. Thank you for conquering death. I believe that you lived, died, and rose again. I surrender my life to follow You. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”
