1. God’s faithfulness to His promises and His plan for Israel.

Romans 10:21 (ESV) 21 ...“All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Romans 11:1-4 (ESV)
1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” 4 But what is God's reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

A remnant in an era of paganism.
2. God has not rejected Israel completely—there is always a faithful remnant

Romans 11:5 (ESV)
5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
3. Israel’s stumbling led to salvation for the Gentiles, but God still has a plan to restore Israel

Romans 11:13-18 (ESV)
13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. 15 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? 16 If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.

Some people believe that the Church has replaced Israel in God’s plan.
This theology has historically influenced Christian attitudes toward Jews and the land of Israel.

Holocaust: Derived from the Greek word for burnt offering.
Shoah: Has its biblical root in the term “shoah u-meshoah” (wasteness and desolation).

We need to recognize the enduring covenant between God and the Jewish people.

Romans 11:19-23 (ESV)
19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.

God’s purpose is not to reject His people, but to cause them to return to Him.

Romans 11:24 (ESV)
24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
4. Israel will be saved when the fullness of the Gentiles comes in.

Romans 11:25-27 (ESV)
25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”; 27 “and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”

Jesus Christ, whom Paul preached, was either the true Messiah or He was not.

Two alternatives:

1) The gospel that Paul preached is not true. Jesus Christ is not the true Messiah and we are still waiting for the coming of the true Messiah.

2) The gospel Paul preached is true. Jesus Christ is indeed the true Messiah.

Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV)
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Zechariah 9:9-10 (ESV)
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Let us live as a faithful remnant looking to and living for our living savior and looking for and living in expectation of our coming Messiah!
