Dig Deeper:
1. As we prepare for Easter, what is on your heart and mind during this time? Why?
2. Read Mark 4:35-40. Describe the events happening in this passage. Who is afraid? Why? Who is not afraid? Why?
3. Read Mark 14:32. What does Gethsemane mean? Why is Jesus praying in this place symbolic of what events are to come?
4. Where was Jesus and His disciples right before this? Why is this significant, both from the perspective of Jesus and of the disciples?
5. What does Jesus ask of His disciples in verse 32? If you were asked by Jesus to pray, what would you pray for?
6. Read Mark 14:33-34. Which disciples did Jesus take farther with Him? What task did Jesus give them? How would feel if you were one of the three that He included?
7. How would you describe Jesus’s state of mind in the garden on the eve of His death? What words are used in the passage to describe how He felt? How does He describe it?
8. Read Mark 14:35-36. What did Jesus do to deal with these feelings?
9. How is Jesus different in this passage than what was described in Mark 4:35-40? How are these events the same? How are they different?
10. How can we be certain that Jesus’s prayer to God has nothing to do with Jesus changing his mind in the face of adversity and everything to do with Jesus knowing what is about to happen? What is about to happen? What “cup” is Jesus referring to?
11. What two important elements is Jesus modeling to us in His prayer which may be important for prayer of our own? How does Jesus show is unfathomable, unwavering faithfulness in His prayer?
12. Read Mark 14:37. Did the disciples adequately carry out the task Jesus had given them? How are disciples sleeping in Mark 14 different than that of Jesus sleeping in Mark 4?
13. How did Jesus react to their failure?
14. Read Mark 14:38. What does Jesus mean when He says, “so you won’t enter into temptation”? Who is Jesus saying this to? Why is this significant?
15. In what ways can we often play down the significance of Jesus’ death?
16. Do you face the same struggles as the disciples did? In what kind of situations? How can we be victorious even when our flesh is weak?
17. Read Mark 14:39. Why does Jesus pray again?
18. Read Mark 14:40-42. How might the disciples feel at this moment? Why did they not know what to say to Him?
19. What lessons do we learn from the disciples in this passage?
20. What lessons do we learn from Jesus in this passage?
Live It Out:
Jesus endured deep sorrow and anguish in order to redeem you. How will you respond?
1. Repent of self-reliance and trust in Jesus Christ alone. Are you still trying to do things in your own strength? Why can’t that work, especially long term? If you do not yet have a relationship with Jesus, today you can! Pray to Him, sharing with Him that you believe that He died for your sins once and for all. Confess that you have been trying to do things on your own but now you want to live for Him.
2. Live your life responding to what Jesus did. If you are a follower of Jesus, do you live remembering daily what Jesus’s death means specifically for you? Do you still hold on to self-reliance, knowing that your trust in Jesus alone is where you find full trust and freedom in Him. Pray to Jesus. Thank Him that he has been faithful in every way you’ve ever been unfaithful, has obeyed in every way you’ve ever been disobedient. Begin to serve Him in a way where every bit of regret and shame you’ve ever felt were taken away, knowing what Jesus endured on the cross.
