Big Idea: God calls us to sow obedience to Him that we may reap His blessings.
I. The Treachery of Sheba (vv. 1-2; 14-22)
A. David makes his way back to Jerusalem as king, but some from
the Northern tribes grow jealous when David seems to show
favoritism to Judah (see 2 Sam. 19:14-15). This leads to an open
rebellion, led by Sheba, that will prove futile.

favoritism to Judah (see 2 Sam. 19:14-15). This leads to an open
rebellion, led by Sheba, that will prove futile.
B. Sheba’s futile rebellion is rooted in worldly concerns, not in the
things of God. We see:
things of God. We see:
1. Jealously (vv. 1-2; cf. Pr. 27:4; Js. 3:16) – Resentment over
David’s seeming favoritism of Judah led to envy and anger.
David’s seeming favoritism of Judah led to envy and anger.
2. Pride (cf. Pr. 16:18; Num. 11:24-30) – Pride shifts Sheba’s
focus from God and places it on himself.

3. Rebellion – God anointed David as king over Israel, but
petty rivalries distracted many from remembering that fact.

C. It’s clear that Sheba had little support for his rebellion (vv. 21-
22). But the larger lesson is that Sheba is reaping what he sows,
as he is not focused on the things of God, but the things of man
(cf. Matt. 16:21-25).

II. The Treachery of Joab (vv. 4-13; cf. 1 Kgs 2:28-35)
A. Joab is a violent man, and he demonstrates it yet again in the
murder of Amasa. Amasa’s appointment as commander of
David’s militia severely diminished Joab’s role, an act that
clearly angered Joab and drove him to more treachery.

B. We see in Joab’s treachery:
1. A murderous anger (vv. 9-10) – Joab had no hesitation in
killing Amasa, his cousin and David’s appointed leader.

2. A rebellious spirit – Joab regularly ignored David’s orders
and acted on his own initiative.
and acted on his own initiative.
C. Like Sheba, Joab too will reap what he sows (cf. 1 Kgs. 2:28-
35). An important application for us is to remember the
importance of sowing the things of the Spirit that we may reap
the blessings of a life that honors God and builds up others (cf.
Gal. 6:7-10).
