He's in the Boat

Verses 35-36,

Just as He was...

➳ Jesus takes no provisions.

Other boats...

➳ This is a living metaphor of Jesus’ recent parables.
Verses 37-38,

Sea of Galilee

➳ 695 ft below sea level.
➳ Surrounding hills = 2,000 ft above sea level.

It was/is common for storms to suddenly roll down onto the water.
hey

Sea of Galilee and surrounding topography...

Verses 37-38,

➳ Jesus is asleep.

➳ The disciples are terrified and angry.
hey

1st century Galilean fishing boat on rough water...

Verses 39-40,

Two Commands, Two Miracles & Two Questions:

➳ Jesus demonstrates His concern for the disciples.

Two commands – Peace | Be still
Two miracles – Storm ceases | Water is immediately calm
Two questions – Why are you afraid? | Have you still no faith?

➳ Jesus demonstrates He has authority over… nature.
Verse 41

Who is this?!

➳ The disciples are more afraid after Jesus stops the storm and calms the sea… Why?
hey

Jonah --- Mark

Application

Sometimes Peace! Be still! is directed at the wind and waves… other times it is directed at us:

➳ The disciples fear and anger, according to Jesus, is a matter of faith.

- Faith is incompatible with a fixation on the familiar.
- Faith is incompatible with a fixation on safety.
Key Questions

1) Is what I’m going through a storm…truly?
2)If it truly is, Who is sovereign over that storm?
3) Do I have faith in Him?

You can know who Jesus is, know what He has accomplished on your behalf, and subscribe to the central tenets of Christianity and not be marked by FAITH.

Key Questions for T+C

4) In what area of life does it appear Jesus is asleep in the boat?
5) How can I approach God from a position of faith rather than from a position of fear and/or anger?
