The Text in Context

Note: This Commentary is technically not about this week's scripture passage, BUT it is a great primer to understand how the book of Revelation is understood in seminary and by scholars. "Because of the historical, contextual, and experiential difference between the first readers of John’s apocalypse and us, we cannot assume to understand all of the symbolism and allegory taking place in the text. John is smuggling notes out from Patmos to these churches, using Biblical language, images, and symbolism that Roman readers would not automatically understand. This is one way to pass notes under the nose of the authorities without getting caught..." (Click link to read more).

1. Read and meditate over Revelation 1:9-20 one more time. What stands out to you? What do you find comforting about this passage?

2. Consider this week the times you have experienced Awe and Wonder; how was God a part of that experience?

3. Practice curiosity about what God may be teaching you through your daily life. Be on the lookout for moment of Awe and Wonder, and stay awhile in that moment.
