God pursues sinners and moralists
Background: eating with “sinners” (vv. 1-2)
Younger Son (self-determinist) (vv. 11-20a)
Father seeks the younger son (v. 20b)
Sees, feels, runs, embraces, kisses
Younger son: offers confession (v. 21)
Father’s conclusion (vv. 22-24)
Bring robe, put on ring/shoes, kill calf, celebrate
My son was dead, now alive; lost, now found
Older Son (moralist) (vv. 25-28a)
Father seeks the older son (v. 28b)
Came out, entreated him
Older son: offers critique of Father’s love (vv. 29-30)
I served/obeyed and you never threw a small party
Your son wasted your property and you threw a party
Father’s conclusion (vv. 31-32)
Son, you are always with me, all I have is yours
Your brother was dead, now alive; lost, now found

The Father sought BOTH sons
God is committed to reconciliation/relationships
