WEEK EIGHT: THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

...A LOOK BACK...

-- Last week we learned that Jesus was affirmed as God’s Son at his baptism and that he wanted to identify with us in his baptism…with a future look towards his death and resurrection…becoming sin so that we could receive his perfection (righteousness…being morally right, perfect).
-- We also saw him go to battle with satan in the wilderness as he was tempted in every way we are but was without sin.
-- Jesus successfully made it through that test and started his ministry by choosing twelve men to be his closest disciples (apostles)
1. Simon (Peter, Andrew bro)
2. Simon (zealot)
3. James (son of Zebedee/John bro)
4. James (lesser/son of Alphaeus)
5. Judas (Thaddeus/Jude/son of James)
6. Judas (Isacariot)
7. Matthew (Levi)
8. John (son of Zebedee/James bro)
9. Thomas (doubter)
10. Nathaniel (Bartholomew)
11. Philip
12. Andrew (Peter bro)

Today we are going to move from the ‘Person of Jesus’ (birth/baptism/temptation/disciples) to the ‘Works of Jesus’ specifically his MIRACLES
1. JESUS IS POWERFUL...HE DID MIRACLES…

-- There are 37 recorded miracles that Jesus did in the Gospels:

Miracles over NATURE…calmed the storm in the boat with disciples, walked on water, turned water into wine, several times caught a huge amount of fish, fed the 5000 and the 4000, produced the coin in the mouth of a fish…Jesus definitely has power over nature

Miracles over SICKNESS…healed a paralyzed man, healed Peter’s mother in law, healed a woman with a bleeding disorder, healed a crippled woman, healed the officials son and also a Centurion’s servant, healed a man with a shriveled hand and even a Canaanite woman’s daughter who was possessed by an evil spirit…there are more but these are just a few examples of his power over sickness and his ability to heal

Miracles over DEMONS…Jesus was able to remove demons from several people…the guy that was roaming around the tombs and said his name was ‘legion’ and Jesus cast the demons into a herd of pigs, the man who was possessed in the synagogue, the boy who had a demon…the dad had a hard time believing (I do believe you can heal him, help my unbelief)

Miracles over DEATH…and at least three times we know Jesus brought people back from the dead…Jairus was a leader in the synagogue who had a daughter that was dying…she did die before Jesus arrived at her house and he rose her from the dead…then there was a widow who had lost her son…but Jesus raised him from the dead too…and don’t forget Lazarus…that one gives us some insight into Jesus’ love for Mary, Martha and Lazarus…he waited 4 days (jewish belief of should hovering for 3 days)…mourned with them…then raised him from the dead…what an amazing thing that must have been
2. JESUS DID MIRACLES WITH INTENTION...

SOMETIMES IT WAS TO BLESS PEOPLE
- He healed people and also brought comfort to them
MK 10:46-52 Blind Bartimaeus

SOMETIMES IT WAS TO REVEAL HE WAS THE MESSIAH/GOD
- Some believed in him as the Messiah (disciples) and some rejected him as the Messiah (most of the leaders of Israel)

Three examples of Messianic miracles:
1. Only the Messiah could heal a LEPER
2. Only the Messiah could heal a person born BLIND FROM BIRTH
3. Only the Messiah could cast out a demon who MADE A PERSON MUTE

These beliefs came from the religious leaders understanding of ISA 35:5-6a, 61:1
- That the eyes of blind would be opened
- The ears of the deaf opened
- The lame will leap
- The mute will talk
- The gospel will be preached to the poor…

- John the baptizer (while in jail) sent his disciples to Jesus to find out if he really was the Messiah and Jesus used both of these messianic passages to confirm he was indeed the Messiah [LUKE 7:18-23]
— The three Messianic Miracles Jesus performed fall in the categories he just laid out to John’s disciples…identifying with the Messiah from ISA 35, 61.
- Jesus was intentional with some specific miracles to prove to the leaders of Israel that he indeed was the Messiah. Here are three…

ONLY THE MESSIAH COULD HEAL A PERSON WITH LEPROSY
LUKE 5:12-16
-- This man was fully covered with the disease…which would eventually kill him. He asked Jesus if he was ‘willing to heal him’…what a desperate place this man was in, falling on his face, begging Jesus to heal him. Jesus did an amazing thing here…reached out his hand and TOUCHED HIM. Not only was he healing his physical disease, but he also was healing his emotional pain (unclean). Jesus told him to do something specific…go to the Temple and present himself to the priest so that they would have to do what was required of them if a person was healed of leprosy. (LEV 13-14). He was forcing the priests to come face to face that he had healed leprosy, something they said only the Messiah could do.
— We see right after that happened he healed the paralytic…in LUKE 5:17 it says that the “Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem”. After the man was healed from leprosy, the priests were now required to enter a stage called “THE STAGE OF OBSERVATION”…they should not talk or ask questions in this formal stage, they could only observe what Jesus was saying, what he was doing and what was being taught…this was to affirm if he was the Messiah or not…they clearly were trying to find a way to discredit Jesus, not affirm he was the Messiah. Jesus used the healing of the paralytic to again affirm he is the Messiah but forgiving the man of his sins (which they believed only God could do) and he proved he had forgiven his sins by healing him of his paralysis…the religious leaders were now in conflict…

ONLY THE MESSIAH COULD HEAL A PERSON BORN BLIND FROM BIRTH
JOHN 9:1-41
-- Again the religious leaders of Israel had said that no one could heal the blindness of a person born blind…except the Messiah…he would be able to do that miracle. So Jesus put them in conflict again proving he could do just what they said only the Messiah could do. They did everything they could to disprove this miracle…but there was no denying it happened. Jesus loved that man and that man believed Jesus was the Messiah and worshiped him after he was healed.

ONLY THE MESSIAH COULD CAST OUT A DEMON WHO MADE A PERSON MUTE
MATTHEW 12:22-32
-- The religious leaders had an exorcism protocol that required them to communicate with the demon inside of a person. They would establish communication and ask for the demon’s name. Through a series of rituals they would use the name of the demon to cast it out of the individual. If that person is unable to speak, they were unable to cast out that demon and said “ONLY THE MESSIAH WILL BE ABLE TO CAST OUT A DEMON WHO MADE A PERSON MUTE”
-- Jesus used this miracle to address that specific situation, proving he was able to cast out the demon. Again, the religious leaders were in conflict.
-- They have now seen him heal a person with leprosy (and denied he was Messiah) and now he has done another miracle that only the Messiah could have done…so what do they do? They attribute that miracle to the work of Satan. This was blaspheming the Holy Spirit and Jesus told them it was the sin that could not be forgiven (the unpardonable sin…it was not an individual sin…it was a national sin…the rejection of Jesus as the Messiah and attributing his miracle to Satan, not the Holy Spirit) This ‘unpardonable sin’ was committed by that specific generation and won’t be attributed to anyone or any other nation again.
-- After they refused to affirm he was the Messiah by performing this miracle, Jesus no longer gave them anymore signs (MT 12:15-42) except the ‘SIGN OF JONAH’ which would be his death and resurrection.
-- Jesus did miracles with intention…proving he was the Messiah. He loved the people and brought about their healing and he loved the nation by proving to them he was the Messiah…if only they would believe him. They rejected all three of these Messianic miracles…rejecting Jesus as the Messiah.
3. WE SHOULD RESPOND TO HIM…

Q: HOW DID ISRAEL RESPOND?
-- They missed it, they rejected him as the Messiah. Jesus did everything that needed to be done to reveal exactly who he was…but they never believed him (some individuals did, but the nation did not receive their King or His Kingdom)

Q: HOW DO WE RESPOND?
-- As we read about these miracles and all that Jesus did, is there a response that would be appropriate for us today? As He revealed Himself to Israel, he has also revealed himself to us….I think we need to respond by acknowledging that He is the Messiah and that He is worthy of our praise and devotion

— DON’T BE LIKE ISRAEL AND MISS IT…
- Some of you don’t believe yet (if you seek me you will find me)
- Some of you believe but are not living as a fully devoted disciple to his call on our lives (disobedient, independent, bitter)
- Some believe and are all in

— BECAUSE OF HIS POWER WE SHOULD BE IN AWE…
Is your view of Jesus small? After today I hope that your eyes have been opened and you are reminded again of his power, his control over everything and that he has become more amazing to you than before. He is awesome

— BECAUSE OF HIS POWER WE SHOULD BE COMFORTED…
In your life right now, Jesus is powerful enough to comfort you in whatever situation you are in. He loves you. He is big enough to hold you in the midst of the storm you are in. He is also big enough to handle you in your apathetic state…trusting in other things because you don’t feel that he cares…he is pursuing you…he can heal you…he can comfort you…what keeps you from running to him instead of running away from him?

— BECAUSE OF HIS POWER WE SHOULD LIVE A LIFE OF FAITH, TRUSTING HIM IN EVERYTHING…
- Here is a hard truth…as we read through all of these miracles, read through the NT…not everyone got healed
- Sometimes suffering is part of God’s plan for us…that might be a hard thing to hear, but it is true…I know, because I have personally experienced it
- Jesus said we would have trouble and pain in our life…but he promised he would be with us
- And he accomplished that through his death and resurrection, sending us the Holy Spirit to live in us…he is the Comforter
- Jesus experienced suffering…he gets it…
- His power revealed should help us to live a life of Fatih (no matter the circumstances)…drawing us to him and trusting him in everything, no matter how scary or painful or difficult that situation might be
RESPOND, REFLECT & COMMUNION

I would like to give you a chance to respond to God…

-- What did God reveal about who he is to you today in our time in God’s word?
-- What did God reveal about what he has done or is doing in our time in God’s word?
-- What did you learn about who you are as we looked at these stories today?
-- What did you learn about what you are supposed to do?

—> Let's take a minute to thank Him, respond to Him, confess our sins to Him, examine our hearts before we take communion...

—> WHAT IS JESUS SAYING TO YOU TODAY?
—> WHAT IS JESUS ASKING YOU TO DO?
