Mankind: Made in God's Image and Likeness

Mankind: Made in God's Image and Likeness

Title: Mankind: Made in God's Image and Likeness The “Crown Prince” of creation. “Lord" Adam and “Lady" Eve! Distinct and unique from every other created being. Who am I? Not just my name., family and ethnicity, but at the core of my being, "Who am I?” The answer to that question begins with knowing and understanding that I am made in the image of God. If I don’t know that, my “Why?” will be set on the wrong foundation. Sunday we’ll celebrate what it means to be made in God’s image and likeness. Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]

The God described in scripture is a very communicative and relational God who did not create the universe and then retreat from it in disinterest or apathy, but who made humankind out of love and for love. He made us relational beings in His image so that we could experience His love,
and He gave us free will so that we could genuinely respond to that love and reciprocate it. Joshua Stateham, Mere Spirituality
Let’s review the creative order:

1. God said…
a. “Let the earth”

2. And it was so

3. God made

4. God saw
a. That it was good, pleasing, useful
b. And He affirmed and sustained it

5. Consistent with their kind(s) 5 times in 2 verses.

a. Microevolution does not prove macroevolution.
It is said there would be at least 40 different stages of evolution required to form an eye. What possible benefit could there be for the first 39 stages? The mathematician D.S. Ulam argues it was highly improbable for the eye to evolve by the accumulation of small mutations because the number of mutations must be so large and the time available was not nearly long enough for them to appear.
“Almost all illustrations of “evolution in action” in textbooks or museum exhibits…involve no increase in complexity or appearance of new body parts or even permanent change of any kind. Small-scale, reversible population variations of this sort are usually called microevolution, although “adaptive variation” would be a better term.”

“Macroevolution is the grand story of how life supposedly evolved by purely natural processes from very simple beginnings to become complex, multicelled plants and animals, and eventually human beings, without God’s participation being needed at any step along the way.” “Darwin assumed that macroevolution was merely microevolution extended over very long periods of time.” Phillip Johnson
Male and Female

1. It’s never good when man tries to remove a distinction God has established.

2. The differences between male and female are not accidents to God, He created them!
And God blessed them

1. Human life would not be possible if the earth were not designed as it is.
2. Neither would it be possible without the blessing of the Lord!
1. Us, Our Image
2. We were created by God

The SLED argument against abortion:

1. Size
2. Level of Development
3. Environment
4. Degree of Dependency

3. We are distinct from all of creation. Angels, animals and plants.

4. “This means the incarnation was truly possible. God (in the second Person of the Trinity) could really become man because although deity and humanity are not the same, they are compatible”. D. Guzik

1. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” John 1:14

5. We must be good stewards of creation
Be Fruitful and multiply and fill the earth

1. God gives humans sexual desire, to be fulfilled solely in covenant.

i. Not only to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth: (procreation) But for a husband and wife to come together as 1

2. To celebrate intimacy
3. To give value.
God’s final analysis of His work of creation is that it was very good. God was pleased with His creation, and so are we!

When Jesus the “last Adam”, came to earth, He exercised the dominion that the first Adam lost.

1. When he died on the cross, He conquered sin, death, the grave and Hell, so that now grace can reign
