Jehovah Roi - The Lord Our Shepherd

Jehovah Roi - The Lord Our Shepherd

God is Jehovah-Roi, meaning, “The Lord our Shepherd.” God wants to be known as the one who is actively present with a watchful eye over his people. The imagery of a shepherd is all throughout the Scriptures and invites us to lean into the tender and caring reality that God watches over us. In Psalm 23, David pens maybe the most famous poem in the Bible and we see Jesus pick up this language in John chapter 10 to describe himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. We'll examine both passages and how they invite us to live life with God..

Origins of "Jehovah"

YHWH - God's name
ADONAI - Lord

Place the first three vowels between the consonants of YHWH -
YAHOWAH, which becomes JEHOVAH.
Jehovah-Roi (The Lord, Our Shepherd)
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” –A.W. Tozer

v. 1: The Lord is my shepherd. This frames the entire psalm.

God being your shepherd - means you have his attentive presence.
You’re never without it!!

God is present. Personal. God is close. Caring.

Psalm 23 declares that God as our Shepherd...
Provides
Leads
Restores
Protects
Directs
Blesses
Secures
35 Jesus continued going around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. --Matthew 9:35-36

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” -Matthew 11:28
*If your journey of faith is continually frantic, frazzled, hurried and hectic - then friend I might suggest to you that you are not resting in your identity as a SHEEP, but rather, you’re trying to do God’s job as the shepherd…
And that friend: “is above your pay grade”

Surrender is the heart posture of a sheep
Striving is the posture of anything but sheep
VALLEYS ARE INEVITABLE
VALLEYS ARE UNPREDICTABLE
VALLEYS ARE IMPARTIAL
VALLEYS ARE TEMPORARY
VALLEYS ARE PURPOSEFUL

God leverages valleys and the lessons learned within. God has redemptive superiority and sovereignty. God can & will build your faith in the valleys of life.
God wants to build your character.
He is far more interested in your growing your character than He is in creating and ensuring your comfort.
Psalm 23:6
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

God’s watching over me.
God's grace is working in me.
Heaven is waiting for me.
Quote:
"The Lord is my Shepherd" is written on many more tombstones than lives.
—Dallas Willard

Q) Is He your shepherd?
Are you fighting back, wandering away because you don’t want him to be?
Caught up striving to lead your own life, carve your own path?

What would it look like to surrender to His leadership, His care over you?

Surrender is the heart posture of a sheep
Striving is the posture of anything but a sheep
Praise Jehovah Roi, our Shepherd!
Whatever you’re going through, know that He cares for you. He loves you with an everlasting love. Draw near to Him, and He will refresh your soul. Listen to His voice, and He will lead you along the right paths.
Even in the darkest valley, He will not abandon you.

Not only is God announcing he is Jehovah Roi — throughout the pages of Scripture — Jesus comes along and confirms this to be true…in the flesh and through himself.

John 10:14-16
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
