Revelation 6 - God Redeemer and Judge
Jesus specifically told His followers…

We can expect tribulation in this world:
We can expect to be persecuted for being Christlike in this world:
God is both love to save and holiness to judge
A Question to ponder
What are these judgments and when do they take place?
Two Differing Valid Views:

Premillennial = these literal judgments occur just prior to the return of Jesus shaking the world awake to the reality of God one last time. The judgments are incremental in timing and severity during a period of great tribulation that leads to the return of Christ.
Grant Osborne, Revelation verse by verse $21 book / $8 ebook

Amillennial = these judgments are symbolic of evil (satanic and human) at work in the world and God’s partial judgments that occur thru the course of human history to the return of Christ.
God responds already, not yet to the injustice of evil and the prayers of His people in all times.
Guthrie, Blessed $10, and NT Wright, Revelation for Everyone $16
Revelation by design makes us have to ponder God’s Word and pray for His guidance, and to realize He is not going to answer everything to our satisfaction.
“Rather than seeing judgment only as something that will happen at the end of time, we need to see that even now a world that has rejected and rebelled against God is experiencing judgment. It’s not yet the final judgment. That’s coming, but this world is experiencing a measure of judgement now.”
What we see in these repurposed OT symbols are likely not a chronological sequence of events but instead the same reality happening from three different angles.

Seals (1-4)
White horse= war
Red horse=conflict
Black horse=famine
Pale horse=death

“Clearly we are not waiting for some future date in which there will be wars and rumors of wars. This has always been a part of life in this world in which nations and peoples and needs and agendas come into conflict.” Guthrie pg 108

(6) = OT language about sun turning black, moon turning to blood, stars falling from heaven…obviously not literal but figure of speech, metaphor to describe something staggering… historic turning points.
Next week…
A Powerful Part for Us to Play: Suffering and Prayer

God is going to bring His people through tribulation, not unscathed, not untouched, but thru suffering, to be like Christ who suffered the injustice and indignity of the Cross on the way to being glorified in heaven. Our only safety and protection is the promise of being with God.
