The ___________________ Of the ________________ (Mark 3:7-13)
7 Jesus went out to the lake with his disciples, and a large crowd followed him. They came from all over Galilee, Judea,8 Jerusalem, Idumea, from east of the Jordan River, and even from as far north as Tyre and Sidon. The news about his miracles had spread far and wide, and vast numbers of people came to see him.
9 Jesus instructed his disciples to have a boat ready so the crowd would not crush him.10 He had healed many people that day, so all the sick people eagerly pushed forward to touch him.11 And whenever those possessed by evil spirits caught sight of him, the spirits would throw them to the ground in front of him shrieking, “You are the Son of God!”12 But Jesus sternly commanded the spirits not to reveal who he was. Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles 13 Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. Mark 3:7-13 NLT
Life circumstances, hurts and pains, disappointments… needs in this life will never let up or slow down. And yes, God has given us some responsibilities to carry out in the middle of it all.
More people follow Jesus to benefit from what they think they can get out or from Him…rather than follow Him to contribute to the ministry He has for them.
The job description of being a believer / disciple…a Jesus follower…isn’t optional. (Matthew 28:18-20 NLT)
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NLT
If you’ve trusted in Christ…and never really have become His Disciple…then consider yourself a poser. Judas was a poser!
A poser is someone who looks and plays the part…but everyone knows they aren’t really living the part.
It’s time we quit posing and start living Him out for others to see the real Jesus in us.
Four Essential _______________ Of A ______________ (Mark 3:13-19)
13 Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him.14 Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach,15 giving them authority to cast out demons.16 These are the twelve he chose:
Simon (whom he named Peter),
17 James and John (the sons of Zebedee, but Jesus nicknamed them “Sons of Thunder”),
18 Andrew,
Philip,
Bartholomew,
Matthew,
Thomas,
James (son of Alphaeus),
Thaddaeus,
Simon (the zealot),
19 Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him). Mark 3:13-19 NLT
Pursuit – vs 13, “called out the ones He wanted” – The most humbling aspect of Kingdom work is found in the fact that Jesus doesn’t need us but that He wants us.
Presence – “to go with Him” – Don’t attempt things for Jesus before you have spent time with Jesus.
Purpose – “He would send them out to preach” – We participate in Kingdom ministry by sharing with others what Jesus has taught us.
Power – “giving them authority to cast out demons” – Ministry is pushing back Satan’s dominion and ushering in God’s Kingdom.
Who Were These Guys And How The Apostles' Died:
· Judas Iscariot: Committed suicide by hanging himself after betraying Jesus. Judas: Unlike Paul, Judas was in the right crowd, heard the correct teachings, and followed the right leader, yet his heart was off. He loved money more than Jesus. He followed Jesus because it was a smart fiscal decision. This heart would lead him to turn his back on his friends and take his own life.
· Matthias Replaces Judas: (Acts 1:21-26), So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:21-26)
· James (son of Zebedee): Was executed by King Herod with a sword. He was the brother of John and was a fisherman.
· Peter: Crucified upside down in Rome, as he felt unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus did. He was Bold, emotional, over talker, type “A” leader a “D” personality who is willing to risk it all.
· Andrew: Crucified on an X-shaped cross in Greece. Brother of Peter, fisherman, originally a disciple of John the Baptist. (Mark 1:16-18)
· John: Died of natural causes on the island of Patmos after facing persecution and being exiled there. He was very smart and calculated, a leader who loved justice. He became unstoppable when he accepted Jesus. His life change… led this “son of thunder” to become the Apostle of love.
· Bartholomew: Cut open and skinned alive with knives. He had widespread missionary travels to India with Thomas and back to Armenia, Ethiopia, and Southern Arabia.
· Thomas: Stabbed with a spear in India. Was a natural doubter and pessimist who becomes a powerful missionary when he chooses Jesus and believes in Him with all his heart.
· Matthew: Martyred in Ethiopia, by a sword. He was considered anoutcast and a traitor to his own people. Jesus named him, “the gift of God.” One of the greatest conversion stories in the New Testament and a lesson that no one is too lost to turn to Jesus and become sold out for Him.
· Philip: Died by hanging. He was a Hellenist, the Jew who grew up looking like a Greek. Philip probably would have looked, acted, and talked like an outsider to the Jews. His strength is his ability to connect with people; his weakness was he tried to fit into the culture to much.
· Simon the Zealot: Died a martyr's death. He was the one who was associated with a group of politically and at times militantly motivated Jews who vehemently opposed Greek culture and specifically Roman rule. Only Jesus could combine Philip the Hellenist (adopted Greek culture), Matthew the tax collector, and Simon the Zealot into one group and keep them unified.
- James the Lesser:(also known as James, son of Alphaeus) was martyred in Jerusalem by the Jewish authorities, who threw him from the temple wall, stoned him, and then beat him in the head with a club…after he had preached about Jesus. The phrase “lesser” probably means younger.
- Judas Thaddeus: Killed with arrows. Often called the man with three names. He was also a Zealot like Simon.
- Paul:Was abrilliant, highly-educated enemy of Christian before he came to know Christ. His conversion story was like his life – epic. He becomes one of the greatest leaders in the church. He was also known as Saul of Tarsus and was considered an apostle, though not one of the original twelve, and is recognized as a key figure in the early Christian church, particularly for his missionary work among the Gentiles
The Ultimate ___________________ (Mark 3:20-21)
Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law
20 One time Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon he and his disciples couldn’t even find time to eat.21 When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said. Mark 3:7-12 NLT
The religious elite, the Pharisees… never approved of the caliber of Jesus’ disciples.
When we truly decide to follow and trust in Jesus, your church family / Jesus Peeps…might prove to be closer than your physical family.
Since you can’t please everyone, seek to find your approval in the eyes of the Lord.
If you have accepted Christ…you were called and chosen to live like what we talked about today. It’s not optional…If your struggling in life to live for Him…remember this:
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
· Jesus is the ultimate supervisor and no matter what you do or what you’ve done…only in and through Him does God approve of us. So be thankful and live for Him.
Questions to Consider:
- Who would you be without Jesus
- Do you listen to Him and do what He says to you?
- Who are you with Him?
- Are you a true disciple or a poser?
