https://www.centralmethodist.com/connectioncardDuring Lent we are engaging in a new series called Church Words. The goal is to understand what these words mean: Evangelism, Sin, Regeneration, Salvation, Sanctification, Redemption. This week we look at the word Regeneration.
Regeneration is not a word we are familiar with. It is only used one time in scripture. It describes what God does in our hearts when we trust in him. We also see Jesus in John 3 describe the need of someone to be born again. Jesus says you cannot see the kingdom of God without being born again. Jesus obviously is not talking about a physical birth but a spiritual birth.
Relationship with God requires more than acting the part, adopting church manners, etc. We need to be born again because we are born into a sinful world and we are infected with sin. Sin is more than wrong actions we do but it is essentially putting our way first rather than God.s. What is required is to turn from sin and turn to God.
What happens when we are born again?
Two things happen. First, we are justified. This is something that God does FOR us. He takes away our sins snd forgives us completely. WE are set from from the guilt of sin.
Secondly, we experience the regeneration (or the new birth). This is something God does IN us. This is where we are set free from the power of sin in our lives. As they hymn goes, "My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose went forth and followed thee." Sin is like having bad burry vision and the new birth allows us to see clearly.
What do we experience when we are born again?
1. Peace with God - Romans 5:1 states we have peace with God when we trust in Christ.
2. Power over sin - Romans 6:14 says that sin will no longer will be our master though we will still struggle with sin. Sin remains but does not reign.
3. Joy - I Peter 1:8 describes the inexpressible and glorious joy we feel.
4. Love - I John 3:14 says we know we have passed from death to live because we love each other.
Application
If Jesus were here, he would invite us to be born again. Do not trust in your baptism, your church membership, your acts of piety or compassion. Allow God to have the key to your heart. Ask him to be your forgiver and leader.
