Joy In Peace, Text: Proverbs 12:20

Proverbs 12:20, Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.

1) The differences between evil and righteous motives can be subtle.

“Truth-telling is better than peace-keeping, and the well-being of the person is more important than the current comfort level of the relationship.”

Jeremiah 17:9, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

We judge others by their actions and ourselves by intentions.

Jeremiah 17:10, “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

John 17:17, Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
2) The pursuit of peace brings joy.

Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Psalm 133:1,3, Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

“This activism is seen as a direct pathway to joy characterized as a profound and lasting state of happiness that results from aligning oneself with the will of God and the well-being of others.” - Richard Clifford

Romans 14:19, So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Steps to pursuing peace:

1. Return good for evil.
Romans 12:14, Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

2. Practice empathy.
Romans 12:15, Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

3. Jump off the crazy cycle.
Romans 12:19,20, Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

4. Do your best and leave the rest to God.
Romans 12:18, If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

5. Let God win through you.
Romans 12:21, Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
