1. The disciples did not recognize Jesus until He broke bread with them. What might this suggest about the ways we can come to recognize Jesus in our own lives? What might have kept them from recognizing Him?

2. Are there times in our lives when we fail to recognize God’s presence? Why?

3. Jesus explained to the disciples how the Scriptures pointed to Him. How does this emphasize the importance of understanding the Old Testament in relation to Jesus' life and mission? How can we continue to grow in our understanding of scripture?

4. How do you normally read scripture? Who or what influences how you interpret the scriptures?

5. In verse 32, the disciples say, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Have you ever had a moment where Scripture deeply moved you or opened your eyes to God? Share an experience.

6. How might verses 32-35 serve as an example for how we might respond when we encounter Jesus?
