Christ’s Temptation
Luke 4:1-13
Main Point
Overcome temptation by following Jesus’ example
Background
The Holy Spirit is with us in temptation (v. 1)
He does not tempt us (James 1:13-14, 1 John 2:16)
He does lead us to places where we must trust Him
40 Days connects many themes
Moses and Elijah both fasted 40 days (Exo 24:18; 34:28; 1Ki 19:8)
Israel was in the wilderness 40 years (Deut 8:2, 4)
Lent is forty days until Easter (without Sundays)
Temptation is stronger when we are weak (v. 2)
#1 Lust of the Flesh: stones to bread (vv. 3-5)
Jesus quotes Scripture (Deut 8:3)
Jesus acknowledges our need for bread
Jesus chooses to trust God for physical needs
#2 Lust of the Eyes: all kingdoms of the world (v. 6-8)
Note: these have been given to the devil (John 12:31-32; 2Co 4:4)
Jesus quotes Scripture (Deut 6:13; 8:19)
Jesus chooses to worship God and follow His path of suffering
#3 Pride of Life: God forced to deliver him (vv. 9-12)
Note: Devil quotes Scripture
Jesus closes with a catch-all Scripture (Deut 6:16)
Jesus chooses to submit to God and not abuse His grace
Application
Lust of Flesh: seeking to fulfill our NEEDS apart from God
Lust of Eyes: giving greater WORTHship to anything but God
Pride of Life: living for SELF-FULFILLMENT rather than for God
Response
How are you tempted to meet your NEEDS apart from God?
What things do you give greater WORTHship to than God?
How are you seeking FULFILLMENT at the expense of God’s grace?
