THE LAW AND GOSPEL

The law was never meant to save us. It exposes our sin, revealing the gap between us and God, a separation that leads to death. But it also points to our only hope, a spotless sacrifice who takes our place.
MAIN POINT

It's All About Jesus
The Good News isn’t just that we would be saved, but that we can live a transformed life through Christ alone
Jesus invites us to walk with Him

John Mark Comer says, “To follow Jesus means to adopt His overall way of life. Our part is to slow down and surrender to God; His part is to transform us.”
When we walk with Jesus, we are to become like Him. To walk with Jesus means we eliminate hurry and surrender to the Father’s will.

BIG IDEA

The narrow path leads to an ever-expanding spacious way of God.

MAIN PASSAGE: Matthew 5:13-17

START HERE: ICE BREAKER QUESTION

If you could spend a day walking and talking with any historical figure (besides Jesus), who would it be and why?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Read Matthew 5:17-20. What does Jesus mean when He says He came to fulfill the Law rather than abolish it? How does this challenge or deepen your understanding of the Old Testament?

John 5:46 says that Moses wrote about Jesus. How does this shape the way we read Scripture? Where do you see Jesus woven throughout the story of the Bible?

The law reveals our need for a spotless sacrifice. How have you personally experienced the difference between trying to be “good enough” and fully resting in Jesus as your righteousness?

1 Corinthians 3:16 says that we are God’s temple, where His Spirit dwells. What does this mean for how we live and how we treat ourselves and others?

Jesus invites us to walk with Him and become like Him. What is one practical step you can take this week to walk more closely with Jesus?
E.S.P.N. for the Group Leader to Remember:

Encouragement
Leadership is 51% encouragement. Don’t underestimate the power of a kind word or a thoughtful affirmation. Look for opportunities to call out the good in each person and remind them of God’s work in their life. Encouragement builds trust and fosters connection in your group.

Scripture
Make space to read Scripture out loud together. God’s Word is living and active, and hearing it read aloud can open hearts and minds to His truth in a powerful way. Even a short passage can spark meaningful conversation and reflection.

Prayer
Create intentional moments for your group to pray together. Whether it’s a simple prayer for the week or interceding for specific needs, prayer connects us to Jesus—and Jesus transforms lives.

Next Step
Always point your group toward one clear, actionable next step before you end. It could be as simple as spending five minutes in stillness this week, reading a specific Scripture, or reaching out to someone in love. A clear next step helps people take what they’ve learned and put it into practice.
