Jesus' questions were invitations to reflect, grow, and change.
Mark 10:35-37 (ESV)
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 36 And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" 37 And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”

Their perspective was earthly, not eternal.
Mark 10:38-40
Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" 39 And they said to him. "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am
baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

"Are you able to drink the cup that I drink. or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
Instead of thrones, Jesus offers a cup.
Psalm 75:8
"For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and He pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.
"For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and He pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.
Isaiah 51:17
"Wake yourself. wake yourself, stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of His wrath.
"Wake yourself. wake yourself, stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of His wrath.
Following Jesus is about sacrifice, not status.
We must be willing to lay down ourselves for the sake of the Kingdom.
The cup is not just for the Apostles, it's for us.
Philippians 1:29
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you
should not only believe in Him but also suffer for His sake.
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you
should not only believe in Him but also suffer for His sake.
2 Timothy 3:12
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
Following Jesus means embracing the cost.
Luke 9:23
If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Greatness in God's Kingdom looks different.
Mark 10:43-45
Whoever would be great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Whoever would be great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Our cup is one of surrender.
Matthew 26:39
"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
