The Pharisees’ tradition had taken place of their worship
Tradition, left to the flawed, human condition, becomes a replacement to the Word and grace of God.
Three actions of Jesus that provoke the ATTITUDE of man:
1. Jesus’ association with SINNERS.
1. Jesus’ association with SINNERS.
A. Christ did not call us because of our WORTHINESS, His call alone is what makes us WORTHY.
2. Jesus was FEASTING while the religious expect Him to be FASTING.
A. It should be our RELATIONSHIP with God and the needs of people that provokes us to fast.
B. The religious used fasting as a means to MANIPULATE God and suppress the people around them.
3. Jesus reminds us what the SABBATH was made to be versus what it came to be.
A. Tradition can turn what is meant to be a BLESSING into a burden.
B. The giving of the Sabbath was God meeting a need of man, not man fulfilling a REQUIREMENT of God.
C. The Spirit of Christ seeks to meet the human NEED, tradition seeks to PRESERVE itself.
D. Christ is not an accessory to a life in order to have peace, He is the SOURCE of a peace-filled life.
