The writer of Revelation is apostle John
The Point = Revelation 2-3 is about how to follow Jesus while living in our own Babylon
Letters to the Seven Churches:
Description of Jesus
“This is the message from the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven gold lampstands”
Recognition of faithfulness
“I know all the things you do…your hard work and your patient endurance…you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims…discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting.”
Exposure of failings
“I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!”
A call to repent
“Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.”
A promise of victory
“To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the tree of life in the paradise of God.”

The letters are universal in purpose
We shouldn’t think that only the Christians in Ephesus are promised to eat of the tree of life or that only Christians in Smyrna are promised to escape the second death or that only the Christians in Laodicea can be disgusting to Jesus or that just five churches in ancient Turkey need to repent or face consequences …All the promises and all the warnings are for all the churches then and now.

The letters were locally relevant at the time
The Situation @ Ephesus
Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus
-the city is the first port the mail carrier would reach from Patmos
-the city is the most influential of the seven being addressed
-the city embodies the anti-Christ culture of Babylon here as the Roman Empire
