3 Key Biblical Principles to Help Overcome Shame
1. God’s Forgiveness is Complete
Colossians 2:13-15 (ESV)
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
No sin is too great for God’s mercy. When we repent, He forgives completely.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Your past does not define you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2. God’s Grace is Greater Than Your Failures
God does not condemn us when we come to Him in repentance.
Romans 8:1 (ESV)
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Shame is a Tool of the Enemy
-Satan tries to use shame to separate us from God.
Revelation 12:10 (ESV)
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
Jesus bore our shame on the cross, offering us freedom from condemnation
-Jesus Took Our Shame on the Cross
Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
3. Live Confidently in the Presence of the Lord
-God invites us to come boldly to Him not hide from Him in shame.
Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
