You're Ruining Your Life - Phil Kendon

You're Ruining Your Life - Phil Kendon

Sometimes, one bad decision can have catastrophic consequences in our lives - an affair, an unwise investment, a trust that is broken. But there are other things that undermine our lives from the inside. They are like termites, eating away the wooden beams of a home. There are signs of their presence in the little dust piles that accumulate but you don’t see the full extent of their damage until the beams disintegrate completely. In this series, we will look at some things that are ruining our lives so that we can take action before they undermine everything.

1. How are you ruining your life?

- Insecurity, pride, unforgiveness, and selfishness are all examples of attitudes and actions that undermine our lives and our relationships
2. God lets us walk through the consequences

- God is a good Father in that he will let us face the consequences of our decisions and actions even the painful ones.

Proverbs 19:3 (NIV)
A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the LORD.

Luke 15:11–16 (NIV)
Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
3. How can I change?

- The power of repentance.

Luke 15:17–20 (NIV)
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

- The power of faith

Mark 1:15 (NIV)
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

- The power of transformation

Ezekiel 36:25–27 (NIV)
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
