https://www.centralmethodist.com/connectioncardThis week we conclude the series Bumper Sticker Theology. The Sticker this week is "Better to Die On Your Feet than Live on your Knees." The main idea behind the bumper sticker this week is that prayer really doesn't make a different. Prayer is just a crutch and has no value.
Have you ever wondered if prayer makes a difference? Some of you have expereinced the joy of answered prayer and others the pain of unanswered prayer. Prayer does change things but God is not a genie to be manipulated.
Prayer changes things and prayer changes us! Here are four ways prayer changes us.
1) Prayer gives us peace - Philliippians 4:6-7 states that if you now how to worry, then you know how to pray. Prayer is simply attention directed from self to God. When we pray to God about our concerns, his peace can settle down over us.
2) Prayer gives us wisdom - James 1:5 states if we ever need to know what to do, ask God. Many times we ask friends, family, make pros and cons list. We have the privilege of asking God when we don't know what to do.
3) Prayer brings wholeness - Matthew 6:12-15 states that when we forgive people in prayer, God forgives us. When we pray to God for people who have hurt us, God heals our hearts over time.
4) Prayer brings Alignment - Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsamane for not his will but God's will. When you pray for God's will, you ask God to shape your will to his.
Neuroscience research is showing how brains change. Studies show that by praying 12 minutes a day for 8 weeks, it can show up as a change in a brain scan. Prayer is focused attention on God.
Don't be discouraged by your lack of prayer. We are all beginners in prayer. Create space in your life to be with God, to pray about things and people in your life. As you do, God will move on your behalf and change you.
