Introduction
Matthew 5:33-37 NASB
33 “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
33 “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
Numbers 30:1-2 NASB
Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the word which the Lord has commanded. 2 If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
3rd Commandment – You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Wear the name, share the name, and bear the name.
34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
A vow is a promise to God. An oath is a promise to another person.
Manipulation is not a spiritual gift.
37 But let your statement be,‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.
Be sincere with God and people.

Group Discussion: What is your definition of Integrity?
Read Aloud: Matt. 5:33-37
1. v.33 “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.” How does the 3rd commandment “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,” correlate with this verse? Is the 3rd commandment about technical speech or heart of reverence?
2. v.34-36 “34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.” What is the difference between an oath and a vow? Where are oaths appropriate? How are oaths used to manipulate?
3. V. 37 “37 But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.” Why do we treat our promises to God differently than our promises to people? Do you have trouble saying no to people? Why? Do you have difficulty committing and saying yes to people? Why? How can you balance yes and no when it comes to commitments?
