WEEK TWO: SINFUL HUMANITY

A LOOK BACK…

-- We looked at the very beginning: God’s eternal existence in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
-- That God created the angels and the whole universe including the foundations of the earth. We saw Satans attempt to place himself above God—to be like God. We learned that God will never allow evil to remain in His presence, so He cast Satan and the demons out of heaven, away from His presence.
-- We also saw how God finished creating the earth and all living things, including humans, which He created in His image to be like Him. God blessed the humans by sharing His authority with them and telling them to be fruitful and multiply, continuing in creation.
-- We learned humans were given the ability to choose and ultimately chose to disobey God and attempt to manage right and wrong for themselves, apart from God.
-- Again, God will not allow evil and rebellion to remain in His presence, so He cast Adam and Eve out of the garden, away from His presence. God continued to show His care for the humans by not destroying them and also creating clothing for them out of animal skins so they would not be naked and ashamed outside of the garden.
INTRODUCTION…

-- Can you remember a time in your life that you wanted to do something that you knew was wrong, and even though you knew it was wrong, you chose to do it anyway? Blatant, intentional, on purpose…fully knowing it was not right? If we are being honest with ourselves (because no one is saying this stuff out loud) the answer has to be yes, and I think we can all admit this is a true statement of our lives.

-- There are sins that we commit…some are sins of OMISSION…which is not doing something we should be doing…and some are sins of COMMISSION…sins that we know are wrong and we do it anyway…

-- The beauty of the love of God is this…that while we were still sinners, Jesus died for us. It is important that we hold on to that truth today, to be honest, to confess our sin before God and know he is loving and forgiving…He knows our sin (omniscient) and He has done everything to make things right between us and him. He has forgiven us in Jesus.

A> For some of us we know Jesus and have a relationship with him having repented (change of mind) and confessed our sins and our allegiance to obey and follow him. For us…forgiveness of all of our sins has been applied to our account…PTL!

B> For others in this room, the sins you have committed, both omission and commission…are still on your account. You have been given an opportunity to be forgiven. Repent. Believe. Follow Jesus.

-- Both of the stories we will talk about today involve sinful beings either obeying God and receiving blessing and relationship with Him…or disobeying God and receiving the consequences of sin which is separation and death

-- I want us today to see how the thread of God’s ongoing love is woven through these stories…and to know that the same thread is being woven into the thread of our story too!!!
BIG PICTURE FOR TODAY…

- The big ideas I want you to understand more deeply today as I share God’s ongoing love story…

1. Every human being has chosen to sin—we choose self over and apart from God

2. And Sin has infected everyone and everything which leads to separation and death. BUT…God has done all the work necessary to give us life and a relationship with Him by his grace, love and mercy. -- This is the thread of God’s ongoing love story to us.

3. God looks at the heart and is the source of grace and mercy while also being just in His judgment of sin and rebellion because he his HOLY.

4. God shows His love towards mankind by rescuing them and redeeming them, giving them a chance to have a relationship with Him (Ark as a type of Christ)

5. Our response to him should be thankfulness, gratitude and a heart that longs to obey him to please and glorify him for all he has done for us!
…SCENE ONE…TWO BROTHERS…

GENESIS 4:1-16 // LOOK FOR THE THREAD OF LOVE

<Vs 1-2> || Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground.

<Vs 3-5> || Cain gave some produce, Abel gave the firstborn and their fat. God must have given them instruction on what was an acceptable offering and what was not acceptable as an offering. God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected Cain’s offering.
-- Cain was furious, [probably envious that God accepted Abel’s offering but did not accept his] and he looked despondent. [disheartened, discouraged, downhearted, hopeless, in despair]

<Vs 6-7> || Thread of love #1: Warning
-- God questions Cain and gives him some nudges to deal with his heart and to do the right thing…the image of Sin crouching at the door is ominous
-- Q: Can you think of a time when this was true of you? A moment of clarity before you gave in to sin…a moment that God “spoke” to your heart, giving you a warning?
-- God gave cain a chance to deal with his furious heart, to take captive these sinful thoughts and do what is right (both with the sacrifice and what he wanted to do to his brother!) “sin has a desire to destroy you or master you”…you have to master it!

<Vs 8> || Such a sad verse…sit here for a quick minute. We have recorded for us the first time a person murdered another person. What a dark revelation of what sin has done…already…in one generation…a brother murders his brother. Tragic, shocking and so sad.

<Vs 9> || Thread of love #2: Pursuit
-- Just like Adam…God continued to pursue Cain...“where is your brother Abel”
-- God knows…he is again working on Cain’s heart that is hard and cold and corrupted by sin. God is giving Cain an opportunity to repent, to confess his sin…But he doesn’t
-- Cain says “am I supposed to know where my brother is at all times? Snarky. Cold. Calculated. Apathetic.

<Vs 10-12> || And now, because of God’s holiness and Cain’s rebellion/sin…God has to judge him...
1. He is CURSED
2. He is ALIENATED from the ground he once worked and it will never yield fruit to him
3. He will be a RESTLESS WANDERER on earth

<Vs 13-14> || It is interesting that his fear is that he will be killed if he is found…He just killed his brother…

<Vs 15-16> || Thread of love #3: God Let him Live
-- God allowed Cain to LIVE…he showed grace and mercy to him and put a mark on him to protect him for the rest of his life.

[WHAT ABOUT ABEL?]
Hebrews 11:4
“4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts, and even though he is dead, he still speaks through his faith.”
…SCENE TWO...THE FLOOD…

GENESIS 6-9 // [LOOK FOR THE THREAD OF LOVE]

<6:1-4> || Nephilim, Sons of God || Not sure what they are…difficult to translate…

<6:5-6> THE LORD REGRETTED/DEEPLY GRIEVED
-- Some Key words || vs3 “They (mankind) are Corrupt” || vs5 “human wickedness was widespread”… “every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time” || vs6 “the LORD REGRETTED he had made mankind”… “He was DEEPLY GRIEVED

<6:7> THE LORD WILL JUDGE AND REDEEM
-- “I will wipe mankind…off the face of the earth” (preserve the future plan…the future seed). God was going to keep his promise of a future redemption (GN 3:15) ||
--> Thread of love #1: Future Messiah

<6:8-9> THE LORD HAD FAVOR ON NOAH
-- >Thread of love #2: Favor
-- Noah found favor with God…He was “a righteous man”, “Blameless”, “Noah walked with God” || out of the whole earth, there was one man who God found favor with…and God would make a way to save him AND his family, redeem him and use him to start over

<6:11-13> THE LORD WILL DESTROY
-- Corrupt x 3, Wickedness x 2 || God’s plan was to destroy it all by bringing about a flood

<6:14-22> THE LORD WILL PRESERVE AND DELIVER
--> Thread of love #3: Ark
-- God gives Noah instructions on an Ark and that he is going to destroy the earth with a flood, but that he would save Noah and his family and would bring to him animals and he was to keep them alive || vs22 NOAH did everything God asked him to do #1

NOTE—> NO MOCKING CROWD: There is no mention of people mocking Noah in this account. Sometimes we read things into the story that aren’t there...maybe logically we can deduce some things but it isn’t explicitly detailed.
-- According to Jesus in [MT 24:37-39]“37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark. 39 They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be.”…the people of Noah’s day were eating, drinking, getting married up to the day he entered the ark…so if anything it seems they were APATHETIC towards God’s judgment and Noah’s boat building
-- [Hebrews 11: 7]“7 By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” …This tells us a little bit about Noah and his faith that was motivated by his fear and reverence of God…it resulted in his obedience to build the ark and to deliver his family from the Flood
-- [2 Peter 2:5]“5 and if he didn’t spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others, when he brought the flood on the world of the ungodly;”… Noah was a preacher of righteousness and was protected by God in the Ark

<7:1-5> THE LORD TOLD NOAH TO ENTER THE ARK
-- Noah alone is righteous || God tells him again it is going to flood in 7 days || Noah did everything God asked him to do #2

<7:6-16> THE LORD SHUT HIM IN AND MADE IT RAIN
--> Thread of love #4: God Shut Him In
-- vs 16 “Then the LORD shut him in” || Rained for 40 days/nights || watery depths burst open || This was in the 600th year of his life (2nd month/17th day)|| <7:24>water surged for 150 days (about 5 months)

<8:1> THE LORD REMEMBERED NOAH
--> Thread of love #5: Remembered
-- So God sent a wind to dry up the water…the sources of watery depths were “closed” and rain stopped || <8:3>Waters receded for 150 days (about 5 months) || Noah sent out a raven and a dove and eventually the ground was drying up

<8:15-20> THE LORD TOLD NOAH TO LEAVE THE ARK
--> Thread of love #6: Delivered
-- God had delivered them safely through the flood on the Ark…which again was a picture, a shadow a type of Jesus || vs20 Noah built an altar and sacrificed to God, which pleased God

<8:21-22> THE LORD MADE A PROMISE TO HIMSELF
--> Thread of love #7: Grace
-- a twofold promise…
1. I will never curse the ground because of humans (even though the inclination evil from youth onward)
2] I will never again strike down every living thing

<9:1-7> THE LORD BLESSED NOAH AND HIS SONS
--> Thread of love #8: Blessed
-- Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth || God also established some boundaries concerning food and also dealt with murder || life for life

<9:8-17> THE LORD MADE A COVENANT WITH NOAH
--> Thread of love #9: Covenant
-- And he has kept his promise! || Alaska rainbows are the most vibrant rainbows I’ve ever seen!
