A symbol of God’s invisible power (John 3:8)

Tongues like fire –
A symbol of God’s presence (Luke 3:16)

Speaking in different tongues –
Gospel proclamation and unity.
5 Marks of a Spirit-filled Church:

1. Devotion to God’s Word

Acts 2:42
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by Godand is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness.

2. Devotion to sharing life together

Ephesians 2:19
…to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread… Acts 2:42So, then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household.

3. Devotion to worship

Acts 2:42-43
…and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.

4. Devotion to radical generosity

Acts 2:44-46
Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. 45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts.

5. Devotion to the mission

Acts 2:47
Praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

What you are devoted to shapes you.

Dig Deeper:
1. Were you able to be a witness and share your faith this week with someone? If so, describe the experience and the outcome.
2. Read Acts 2:1. What does Pentecost mean? What happened on the day of Pentecost? What happened on the Feast of the Firstfruits?
3. Who was “all together in one place”?
4. Read Acts 2:2-4. Unpack this passage verse by verse. What words would you use to describe this scene?
5. Where is fire used elsewhere to represent God’s presence?
6. Read Acts 2:6-8. Who were the Galileans? Why is it powerful that they were speaking in other languages?
7. “Glossolalia,” translated as tongues, means what? What is the primary purpose of the gift of tongues?
8. Read Acts 2:9-11. Look up these places on an ancient map. What is the modern-day country (if different than in ancient times). Why is this event so significant? What was made possible through this event?
9. Read Acts 2:37. Why were they “pierced to the heart”? Why are they asking what they should do?
10. Read Acts 2:38-41. There is a lot that happens in this passage. Go verse by verse and discuss what stands out to you.
11. Read Acts 2:42. What is the first thing they do after they were baptized? Was this coincidence? Why or why not?
12. Read 2 Timothy 3:16. Share examples of how the Bible has taught, rebuked, corrected, and trained you in righteousness.
13. Read Acts 2:42. What is the second thing that they are devoted to after they are baptized? Describe how this same devotion has affected you personally.
14. What is the third thing mentioned that they were devoted to? Why is this included?
15. Read Ephesians 2:19. What does it mean to be a citizen with the saints? How about a member of God’s household?
16. Read Acts 2:42. What is the final thing they were devoted to? Describe a time when your devotion to prayer impacted your life.
17. Read Acts 2:43. Why were they filled with awe? Does what happened before this verse have an impact on them being in awe? Why or why not?
18. Read Acts 2:44-45. Have you seen this lived out in your group or community? If so, describe what happened.
19. Read Acts 2:46. Why is it significant that they ate with joyful and sincere hearts? What might have been their practices, with food, possessions and property, before this time?
20. Discuss the different places where they met. Why are each important?
21. Read Acts 2:47. What actions of the people might have encouraged others to be “added to their number those who were being saved”?
22. How might we live out more deliberately the same as what is described here in Acts? What impact might that make in our community and world?

Live It Out:

What you are devoted to shapes you. What are you devoted to? What does it mean to be “devoted”? Take time this week to pay attention to where your devotion lies. Focus on your devotion to:

1. God’s Word – Being devoted to God’s word does not mean spend time just reading God’s Word but learning more about what God says as you read. Is the Bible your foundation, your guide, and your ultimate truth? Find a Bible Reading Plan at www.thebridgevenice.com/read-the-bible and then dive into His Word with devotion! Scripture + Application = Transformation!
2. Sharing Life Together – Are you in close, spiritual connection with others through a Bridge Group? If not, find one today! We were created with a need for relationship. New Bridge Groups are starting up all the time, so there are many ways to get involved! https://www.thebridgevenice.com/bridge-groups
3. Worship – When was the last time you were filled with awe by God – through something that happened in your life or by being surrounded by His creation every day? Spend time this week worshipping God. Journal, sing, go on a walk…whatever brings you closer to the presence of God.
4. Radical Generosity – Early Christians found more joy in sharing with each other than they did in possessing stuff! This week, find someone who is in need and meet that need, remembering that the use of your resources is not mandatory, but voluntary. We live generously out of the overflow of God’s generosity.
5. The Mission of God – Are people drawn closer to Jesus through your words and actions throughout the week? Are you praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people? If not, consider how you can show genuine love to others so that they, too, can be saved through Jesus Christ!
