Memory Verse:
Proverbs 12:26 NKJV
The righteous should choose his friends carefully,
For the way of the wicked leads them astray.
Eisegesis vs. Exegesis
Eisegesis is reading into the text vs Exegesis is reading the text.

This is how we know that this wasn’t an inappropriate relationship:
The Bible has no problems explicitly stating the sin of it’s characters.
The words here are not used to describe sexual relationships elsewhere in the Bible.

You can’t read the Bible for what you want it to say, you have to read it for what it says.

We don’t change the Bible, the Bible changes us.

Knowing who your friends are is one of the most important lessons you learn in life.

Proverbs 27:19 TLB
“A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.”
Saul
Goes back on his word. (1 Sam 17)
Schemes to destroy (1 Sam 18-20)
Characterized by self interest
Has no honor
Sets David up to fail

Jonathan
Had David’s back. (1 Sam 19:1-3)
Spoke well of David (1 Sam 19:4)
Protected David’s life
Risks his life to protect
Sacrifices himself for David’s success
Taking a “Friend-entory” (a friend inventory) – six questions that help reveal the right THEY.
2. Do they celebrate God’s blessings in my Life?

Proverbs 11:10 NLT
“The whole city celebrates when the godly succeed;”

One of the surest signs of spiritual maturity is the ability to authentically celebrate when others win, even if you haven’t got yours yet.

4. Do they hold me accountable out of love and friendship?

Proverbs 27:6 NIV
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”

1 Samuel 20:42 CSB
Jonathan then said to David, “Go in the assurance the two of us pledged in the name of the Lord when we said, ‘The Lord will be a witness between you and me and between my offspring and your offspring forever.’” Then David left, and Jonathan went into the city.
5. Do they live what they believe?

Psalm 119:63 NIV
“I am a friend to all who fear You, to all who follow Your precepts.”
5. Do they live what they believe?
“A person can be affected by the power of God (resulting in an amazing experience of God) but not be surrendered to God, which results in a changed life.”
- David Guzik
“I had these friends…”

The greatest asset you can bring into any relationship is a Christlikeness, and we will never bring that unless we live our lives for Him.

Get real.
Be humble.
Love Jesus.
