Sermon Title: The church being the Church Pt. 2
The church was gifted - vs. 27
He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. - 1 Cor. 12:7-11
“...But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.
- 1 Corinthians 14:1
“... So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out ...” - Romans 12:6
“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets...” - Ephesians 4:11
Where do the gifts come from? “It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” - 1 Cor. 12:11
The gifts are to help people. “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” - 1 Cor. 12:7
“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the
prophets,” - Ephesians 4:11
Don’t run from the gifts that make you feel uncomfortable, that you don’t understand, or that you have seen misused.
Just follow the teaching of scripture: “19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
1 Corinthians 13:1-3, “If I could speak all the languages of earth and
of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a
clanging cymbal...”
The church gave selflessly - vs. 29
Generosity was the way of life for the early Christian, and that heart has identified believers ever since!
2 Corinthians 9:7-8, “7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully...”
“15% of everything Christ said relates to this topic—more than his teachings on heaven and hell combined.”
Why does Jesus express such a remarkable concern with what we do with our money?
The reason is the basic principle that Jesus laid down: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also...”
Now What?
- We need embrace ALL the Holy Spirit has for us today, especially the gifts of the Holy Spirit
- We must make the decision daily live to generously
