Put Off, Put On

TODAY’S MESSAGE:
“PUT OFF, PUT ON”

Today the message is entitled “PUT OFF, PUT ON” - PART OF OUR MINI SERIES: DIE TO MULTIPLY and it comes from Colossians 3. One of my favourite chapters in the Bible because it gives such a powerful, practical summary of what the Jesus follower’s life should look like.
How many of you remember “Karate Kid”? Remember how Mr Miagi taught him “wax on with right hand, then wax off with left hand” - this is not wax on wax off, it is “PUT OFF, PUT ON”...

READ: COL 3
Not Carnality but Christ
COLOSSIANS 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 FOR YOU DIED, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
5 THEREFORE put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him (Seed&Soil, Understanding, knowing Jesus, becoming more like him), 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
Character of the New Man
12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
The Christian Home
18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

I Peter 1:22-23 - 'Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, '

II Corinthians 5:16-17 - 'Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, IF anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. '

Galatians 2:19-20 - 'For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. '

Galatians 5:24-25 - 'And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. '

Romans 6:1
Dead to Sin, Alive to God
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

NOW READ AGAIN:

THE POWER TO CHANGE PRINCIPLES:
1. To experience lasting change focus on WHO before DO
2. You do what you do because of what you think of you
3. To change what you do, you need to first change what you think of you.
4. You are who God says you are.
5. You WILL change and you CAN become who you want to become.
6. If your DO is about who God wants you to become, about who you want to become, then your DO is not small.
7. To change you need to think the right thing about yourself, know your true identity, and start your true identity with WHO not DO.
8. Defining your win is how you begin. Write down your goal and tell someone.
9. Trying doesn’t work. Training does. Trying is an attempt to do the right thing by exerting effort in the moment. Training is commitment to strategic habits you do before the moment that equip you to do the right thing in the moment.
10. Discipline is not a dirty word. Discipline is choosing what you want MOST over what you want NOW. The path to public success is always paved with private discipline.
11. Make doing your habit your win. You don’t have to win every day to win.
12. I’m not trying. I’m training!
13. If you want to change who you’re becoming, change your habits. If you want to change where you’re going, change your habits. If you want to change your life, change your habits.
14. Never underestimate how God can start something big through one small habit. The small things no one sees can lead to the big results everyone wants. Success happens not by accidents but by habits.
15. A habit is basically behavioral autopilot born of the process of cue, craving, response and reward.
16. Make your habit:
1. Obvious
2. Attractive
3. Easy
4. Communal
5. Repitious
17. Good habits are difficult to start because the pain comes now and the payoff is in the future. Bad habits are difficult to stop because the payoff come now and the pain is in the future.
18. Success is becoming more like Jesus
19. Successful people do consistently what other people do occasionally
20. We need a power we don’t possess. Value progress over perfection.
21. If you don’t like what you’re reaping, change what you’re sowing. If you don’t like the harvest, change the seed.
22. You reap more than you sow. A small change can change everything.
23. You will reap a harvest if you don’t give up.
24. You think you can, but you can’t.
25. You can’t, but God can. And God will, if you turn to his power.
26. Willpower doesn’t work, but God’s power does, and his power is:
1. Available
2. Accessible
3. Active
4. Abundant
27. If you renew and remain before the moment, and if you acknowledge and ask in the moment, you will have God’s power to walk by the Spirit.
28. When you’re winning, you’re winning. When you’re losing, you’re learning.
