TITLE: Which Christ are you following?
SERIES: The Father's Heart: A Journey Through 1 John
TEXT: 1 John 2:18-23
Three takeaways to ponder:
1. The importance of authentic faith.
2. The danger of spiritual deception.
3. The assurance and perseverance of our faith.
1. The importance of authentic faith.
2. The danger of spiritual deception.
3. The assurance and perseverance of our faith.
Study Guide Questions:
1. What does John mean when he says that many antichrists have already come (1 John 2:18)? How does this affect the way we recognize truth from error? In today's world, false teachings often blend with cultural trends and personal preferences. We must develop spiritual discernment by consistently studying Scripture and asking the Holy Spirit to guide us in truth.
2. John describes those who left the church as those who 'did not belong to us' (1 John 2:19). How can we distinguish between temporary struggles in faith and a complete departure from Christ? When we see someone drifting from faith, we should not quickly assume they have abandoned Christ. Instead, we should reach out, pray for them, and encourage them in their spiritual journey while also being aware of signs of total rejection of the faith.
3. John says believers have an 'anointing from the Holy One' that helps them know the truth (1 John 2:20). How does this anointing work in our lives? We must actively cultivate our relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, worship, service and study of God's Word to recognize His voice and discern truth from deception in a world filled with counterfeits.
4. John firmly states, 'No one who denies the Son has the Father' (1 John 2:23). Why is acknowledging Jesus so central to authentic faith? Many today try to separate faith in God from belief in Jesus. We must boldly stand for the truth that Jesus is the only way to the Father, living in a way that reflects His lordship in every area of our lives.
