Prayer and Praise

Romans 12:15 says, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Take a moment to let us know how we can rejoice with you or bring a need before God with you.

Colossians 3:1–11 (ESV) - If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
Colossians 3:1–2 (ESV) - If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) - I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Colossians 3:3 (ESV) - For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

John 12:24–25 (ESV) - Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Colossians 3:4 (ESV) - When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:5 (ESV) - Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:

Put to death = kill it. – you are in a battle that needs your full attention.

What is keeping you from growing closer to God?
In 2025, what needs to die in your life so you can live more fully for Jesus?

Colossians 3:5b-9 (ESV) - …sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices…

Put them all away = set aside

Put off the old self = take off/strip off

Paul’s pattern of writing reminds us that behavior follows belief.
Colossians 3:10-11(ESV) - 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

A key to change is learning about the change you’re seeking.

Revelation 5:9–10 (ESV) - And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

Put off / put on – live the new life Jesus has provided.
Discussion Questions (Read Colossians 3:1-11 and pray before you begin)

1. Is there a specific way the Holy Spirit used this week’s message to convict or inspire you to grow in Christ? If so, share that with the group.

2. We are to seek and set our minds on things that are above. Describe what the Bible teaches as “things that are above.” How does this passage help define it?

3. With this understanding of things that are above, discuss how we are to seek these things and set our mind on these things on a daily basis. How does the rest of this passage give insight to this?

4. Reread verse 3. Describe the comfort this verse give you?

5. How does verse 7 remind you of what Christ has done for you and how does it influence your compassion for non-believers?

6. What does it mean in verse 11 that “Christ is all, and in all”?

7. Seeking to just put off is not enough (“I need to stop sinning”). Our focus needs to be on what we are to put on. How can you grow this week in focusing on what to put on?
