1. Law & Flesh
“For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.”
The law is holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12). Its purpose is to reveal sin (Romans 7:7).
However, the law is powerless to save because of human weakness—our flesh (Romans 7:18).
Key point: The law diagnoses the problem but offers no cure. It exposes our inability to meet God’s perfect standard.
2. God’s Solution: The Sending of His Son
“By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.”
“Likeness of sinful flesh”: Jesus fully identified with humanity but remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15– For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.)
“For sin”: Jesus was sent as the sin offering, the ultimate atonement (2 Corinthians 5:21 - For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.)
“Condemned sin in the flesh”: At the cross, sin’s power was broken, and its penalty paid in full.
3. You Are Righteous — Because of Jesus
“In order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us.”
The law’s righteous demands—holiness, justice, and love—are fully met in Christ and applied to us through the Spirit.
Key point: This fulfillment is not by our effort but by union with Christ and the work of the Spirit within us.
4. Walking in the Spirit
“Who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Walking in the flesh means living under the control of sin, self, and worldly desires.
Walking in the Spirit means living in step with God’s will, empowered by His presence (Galatians 5:16 - But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.)
Key point: The Spirit leads, guides, shows, convicts, and empowers us to live a life that pleases God, reflecting His character.
