Sermon Title: The Holy Spirit is God in us.
Text: John 14:16-17

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

Point 1: You’re not born with the Holy Spirit. He is a gift from God upon salvation.

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Rom. 8:9-11

Point 2: The Holy Spirit is necessary for the sanctification of the believer.

But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Pet. 1:15-16

Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. 2 Tim. 2:21

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. Rom. 6:22

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body[b] in holiness and honor. 1 Thess. 4:3-4

But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 2 Thess. 2:13

Point 3: Once received, a believer has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit forever.

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Eph. 1:14-14

Point 4: The world can’t understand, figure out, or accept the Holy Spirit.

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor. 2:14

Point 5: We can know the Holy Spirit, just like we can know Jesus.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Gal. 4:6

Application: Since every believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit upon conversion, we should seek to get to know the Spirit day-by-day as well as be guided, counseled, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Cor. 6:19-20

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 1 Pet. 4:14
